I just moved to Provo and I don't know where to hunt. I am looking primarily for cottontails so that I can get some meat out of the deal but jacks are fine too as I'm in this for the fur. Any ideas? I don't mind a little driving but don't have time to really travel a lot. Thanks in advance for any tips.

This is about as bad as it gets for rabbits this year. They are VERY far and few between. There are some posts from this past weekend you should read.[cool]

For good numbers of cottons, the Vernal area usually holds a bunch of them...this year might be different, as numbers seem to be down.

Be careful if your going to skin Jack rabbits. I picked one up to show my nephew once and got ring worm. They are crawling with disease and viruses.
BTW what are you going to do with rabbit furs?

Despite the name ring worm is a fungus, and not harmful, however it's annoying. It is easily treated, so I wouldn't worry about that. I'd be more worried about all the ticks those little buggars have on them!

+2 on the ticks. A host of diseases is transmitted by ticks in rabbits, and by contact with their blood, including Lyme disease. I wouldn't handle a jackrabbit if you payed me to without some rubber gloves and watching closely for ticks.

It is usually easy to treat. It took 3 different types of prescription creams and a heavy dose of oral prescriptions to take care of mine in the end. It took months. I'm sure there is always risk in handling wildlife, jack or not, but I learned my leason with the bunnies.

Read my post a couple of days ago "Bad year for bunnies". It looks like ice fishing would be a better bet this year.
