Fishing the Smith River?

I will be in Crescent City (CA) this July and am told the Smith River is an excellent fishing spot. Has anyone fished the Smith? Can I fish from spots on the shoreline/riverbank? What tackle is used? Lures? etc? Is Lake Earl a fishing spot? Anyone know it?
