fishing near Pocatello
#1
I posted on the welcome board and they said I should probably post here. My son received a scholarship to play football at Idaho State. We will be going in late July early August for about a week to hang out in Pokey and catch a few practices. I would like to take my younger son out to do some fishing. I have hunted a few places in Idaho but no fishing. Not much of a fly fisherman. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

If you're going to be around Pokie I would recommend American Falls 20 minutes west of Pokie, or toward Preston area 1 hr South off I-15 a little bit. The other option if you want to go a little further from there you could go north either east of Idaho Falls to hit the S. Fork of the Snake or North towards Ashton/St. Anthony and hit the Henry's Fork of the Snake. Lots of opportunity in those. The bass are around Pokie, trout will be more around I.F.

GB,

The other replies seem to think that you have a boat. The answer is dependent on the boat question and what tackle you have. I am assuming you have no boat and just simple gear to cast a worm a short distance. You would probably do best to fish creeks that are stocked. Those would include Mink Creek, Pebble and Topance Creeks nearby and the upper end of the Portneuf River. All but Mink Creek are north of Lava Hot Springs. Mink Creek is just south and a bit west of Pocatello but will require some battling of willows to get to the fish. All of these will be for small rainbow trout.

Thanks for the info. No I will not be bringing a boat, and we would like to fish for trout. Thanks again for the responses.
