Took my boss on his first walleye hunt Friday. Dumped the boat in the water at 7, air temp a brisk 52, water was 48.5.
Friday: The sky stayed over cast all day with no wind and a high around 75. What absolutely perfect conditions for both the fish and the fishermen, I wish I could order up a dozen days like that for the summer.
Things started out slow with only one walleye and one small bass before 10:00. After that they started picking up and stayed awesome all day. We quit at 4:00pm on number 34 for the day. I got one that weighed 7 lbs on my IFGA certified scale. My boss got one that weighed almost 5 and we got alot of fish in the 19 to 22 inch range. Kept some of the 17 to 21 inchers for a great family meal and sent the rest back for the next trip.
Sat: Took my 15 year old boy back to the scene of the crime from yesterday with high anticipation of a boat load of big fish. Hit the water at 7:30 with balmy temps and a light sprinkle falling. It never got any better, the rain came down light and steady all day. Once in a while it would pick up harder for 30 or 40 minutes and then lighten back up. Once in the late afternoon the sun even came out for a few minutes, but alas it was just a tease and 15 minutes later had to don the rain gear again. The fish were lethargic to say the least. Once in a while you would hit a little patch and get a couple bites, but all too often it was an extended game of cat and mouse with a nipping fish trying to get him to eat enough to hook up.`Ended the day about 5:00 with 9 walleye, 1 perch, and 1 20 inch brown. Walleye were all small, largest about 17 inches.
What to tell a dejected 15 year old. "Buddy, that's why they call it 'Starvation', You can't make a living there." "Welcome to Walleye 101, where the patterns are as unpredictable as the Starvation weather."
