Tiger Muskie
#1
I have a question for those big tiger muskie fans out there. What are some of the better lures and methods for catching them? I went to Lake Condie a few weeks ago and didn't have any luck....with any specie of fish as a matter of fact. Any advice would be appreciated.

There might be a few left in there. The last stocking was in 2002. There were only 168 put in at that time. Before that, 248 were put in Condie in 2000. I'm guessing most of those 2000 planting have come and gone at this point, but there may still be a few of the 2002 crop in there. I just don't know if there are enough to make it worth targeting them. I heard Lamont and Johnson, also in the Preston area, have more and have been planted more recently.

I know of one hooked last weekend around the 30" range at Lamont and I also seen one at Jonhson that was around 30". He was only 3-4' from me hiding in a willow bush. Tried to get pics, but they would not turn out in the water.

I haven't fished for them since I moved to Idaho, but I used to tear them up in Michigan on a 3/4 oz chrome and black Mag Trap (Rat-L-Trap). I've got one with grooves in its sides to prove it. I have also done well using a spinner bait with a large willow leaf blade.

Another option if you really want to get into them is to head to the Utah side and hit Newton. There are a lot of them in there, and they're getting to be around 40". I caught 4 last spring while bass fishing with 4" curly tail grubs. They should be getting pretty aggressive right about now.

Yeah the boats are really bad. That's part of why I haven't really fished it this year. If I have the time, I'd rather go to Idaho. But, the musky and bigger bass are tempting me, and I'll probably fish it soon.

I don't think any of the lakes have been stocked for 3 years and I don't think they will until a disease free source can be found. I think every state is in the same boat so to speak.

I've heard that a guy I know caught a 48" tiger on Newton last year, whether that's accurate or not I don't know, but I'm sure there are a few that size around. My biggest in Newton is 32", maybe I'd better get down there and try to beat my record.
I also heard about some tiger's in Oneida, anyone else heard this? And what I heard was that they are BIG.

I noticed a while back that the Idaho Fish and Game website lists Tiger Muskie for Oneida. They don't list them on the stocking reports though. I just figured it was inaccuracy on their part since they don't even list walleye and smallmouth as being in there. Guess they could be right. I'm not sure how big the tigers I got out of Newton were since I was in my float tube and figured it was a bad idea to try pulling them aboard with me. They all seemed around 3 feet, but it's hard to be sure.

Yeah, it's too bad about the virus. I'm glad they put the catch and release regs on them to protect them. I just hope they can find a solution before they get old and die off. I'm okay with the sterile northerns if they decide to do that. They're not as big, but they'd still be a lot of fun.

last time they planted johnson and lamont was in 06 they put 151 in johnson and 300 in lamont. and they planted lamont, johnson, and condie in 02. I cant remember the last time they drained condie but i want to say it was around that time.

If they ever do get a pure strain and figure that virus out i think they will plant them alot heavier sense they are trying to put the hatchery for them in down in slc. It would be alot easy for idaho to get them.
