Starvation Tube Floatilla 5/28/09
#1
[cool][#0000ff]TubeBabe and I met up with 135Guy and streamfisherman in Heber and caravaned to Knight hollow. Cold 34 degrees passing Strawberry at 6 AM but got to see a few elk in the meadows. Lovely.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]53 degree air temp and 59 degree water temp at our 7:30 launch. Colder water coming into the channel from the inlet. Lots of fish on sonar...mostly chubs and carp. I got a chub right off and 135Guy caught two carp.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TubeBabe has her favorite smallie spots and she kicked over to them while I headed up toward Sandy Beach for a walleye prospecting session. Missed a couple of hits and then brought in a 10" perch...only perch of the day for any of us. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]My highlight of the day occured when some old dude in a boat skidded up and almost ran over me. His greeting was "Can ya get any more rods on that thing?"...referring to my 4 tube rod rack. I replied that I probably could if he wanted to donate a couple. After a few seconds of silence he started in with the barrage of questions...like since I was in a float tube I should know everything there is to know about the lake...and I owed it to him to provide as much info as I could. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]A golden moment. He had just divulged that he had been working one end of Starvation to the other for five days and had not caught a walleye. That was when my one and only walleye chose to chomp on my jig. Bendo, splasho, netto. 18" 'eye. The old guy really got agitated. I did not hear (or translate) everything he said but it is probably just as well.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Then he started in by trying to get me to give him my walleye. NAY...NOT SO. When that didn't work he almost demanded that I give him one of the jigs like I caught the fish on. NAY, NOT SO AGAIN. All this time is he within a few feet of my tube, upwind and drifting toward me so I have to keep paddling to keep him from climbing in the tube with me. I finally had it and told him he was over my other line and I wanted him to move. His reply? That don't bother the fish. But, he did move uplake and started pestering the two other guys. I guess he was a bit surly with them too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I worked in and out, shallow to deep, and most of the way down to the high point on the north side of Knight Hollow. 135Guy and Streamfishermen caught up to me and 135 whacked a small smallie. Released. Shortly thereafter I brung in a phat and yugly 15 inch chub. EEEEYUKKK. Released to make some babies to feed the walleyes. That was all for me. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Normally the prevailing breezes are from the west. I felt that kicking to the west was no problem if the breeze came up, I would just hang ten back to the car. BUT NOOOOOOO. A fairly steady breeze started blowing in from the EAST just as we wanted to head back in...since we both had to be back in town early. That was a long tough commute. And, wouldn'cha know it. Just as we got within about 50 yards of the vehicles the wind died down.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There were a lot of building clouds and we did hit some rain a couple of times on the way home.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Got to meet FOD and his K-9 crew, in his drift boat. Nice setup and nice dogs. Good to meet you Scott.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TubeBabe found a few smallies and a couple of chubs. She released several smallies but kept 3 small ones for the scampi pan.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Weather was great most of the day. Could have done without the forced frothing of the water on the way back in. But, it was fun and good company.[/#0000ff]

Good for you Pat, for not giving in to that guys' demands. Some folks are just plain ignorant of others' space (and fish!).

I'm glad he didn't run you over in all his frustration!

You guys all departed at the perfect time. Once I got back out on my second launch of the day I only lasted for about 15 min and a fierce wind picked up making it a hard row back to take out. The storm had clouds surrounding the lake but not a drop on my head(lucky). I had a great day!! only caught two walleye they were both smaller that some of the perch that I caught the other day[crazy] but were still fish and I got away without a skunk, unlike yesterday..... The day was filled with people cutting me off my destined path trolling, I am sure that "that guy "was one of the many that decided to NOT have any manners and proceed to MOTOR right where I am heading. Anyways For whoever cares the diversion water has been turned back on. Caught one fish right at the mouth and one off a point, both on bouncers. It was nice to meet everybody floating and I also met another BFTr in a white boat with a cute fluffball dog nice talking to ya all. I will be out there tomorrow again to see if the wind pushed the mud line out into deeper water.

Wish I could have met you sewfish and rusty hook but I think that you were fishing in the right place today.

[cool][#0000ff]Some folks are picking up a few perch, here and there. But the big schools usually don't move shallow until the water warms a bit. July through September are the best months for perch all over the lake.[/#0000ff]

Boy that smallie looks really small in that HUGE net! Thanks for the good company TD and TB. We enjoyed meeting you and enjoying the good weather. K9 good to meet you as well. I decided I need to rig up a sail for my float tube. That way I can take advantage of the wind. All I'll need is some pvc pipe and a tarp and a little imagination. Good times we need to do it again sometime.

I ALMOST FORGOT I FOUND A YELLOW HANDLED POCKET KNIFE right where everyone was launching and pulling out. It looks like someone might have to come back out here to reclaim it and do some more fishing. If not I will be back in Salt Lake some time in June....let me know if it belongs to anybody and it will get back to them.

[cool][#0000ff]Not mine.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]All I found was a couple of piles left by your dogs where I had to set my tube.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Oh yeah, I also dragged in a bottom bouncer rig that I hooked on one of my jigs. Maybe yours?[/#0000ff]

That is how I found the knife when I was picking those "piles" up with a shovel. It was right next to them. Sorry about leaving it in your way but it needed a couple hours to settle.... yuck, I know ....... sorry.

I have not yet lost a bouncer but Ive lost a couple spinner harnesses

BTW the "piles" were not as bad as the blimped beaver that was only about 50 feet away half in the water ,half out....EEEEWWWW but my dog seemed to like it

Nice report Pat! I recognize the lure used to catch the walleye. Thanks for the excellent detailed report with pictures. Your reports are always educational and revealing.

I looked at my Starvation map to find Knight hollow but couldn't see anything on the map to help me. My guess is that it must be somewhere on the opposite end of the reservoir from Rabbit Gulch.

I think I will try to get out to Starvation sometime next week. Where do you think might be a good area to fish?

Incidentally, were you able to salvage my waders or are they a lost cause? I appreciate you willingness to try to repair them--whatever the outcome!

Keep me informed about your upcoming fishing plans. I can always jump in my car and join you, when convenient.

[cool][#0000ff]Knight Hollow is where I took you a couple of times. See the two attached maps.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have put 4 different mends on those waders and each time they leak further up the seam.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Those are not good tubing waders anyway. Made for yuppie flyflingers who wade and who wanna look sleek on the water. No room for any extra layers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Your lightweights will work fine.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Better to wait another week or two for the fishing to improve out there. Still much earlier than we fished it last year. Let me know when you are ready to gang up on them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Thinking about getting together a "Gorilla Floatilla" for big catfish next Thursday...Lincoln Beach. You interested? Should be some post spawn walleyes in the area too. As I remember, you scored a decent one there about this time last year.[/#0000ff]

Note: I don't know why, but my original reply did not carry any message. I had to edit the blank message to send the message again.

Original message: Thank you for the information about Starvation and for the maps. I copied the maps for reference in the future. I am sure that other members will also appreciate them. I am anxious to fish Starvation as soon as the fishing picks up. Let me know when you think the time is right. I am ready to gang up on the walleye and perch as soon as the fishing there improves.

I was glad to hear that you may be setting up a fishing floatilla for Lincoln Beach next Thursday. Count me in, if that materializes. I remember the great fishing trip there last year at this time.

Thanks for the effort on the waders. I appreciate you insights and kindnesses.

Hey FOD, it was nice meeting you and your K-9 friends. We didn't pick up anything that day we saw you, did have a few bites but didn't get the feel for them until the next day down by the river. Did pick up a nice 21+ inch walleye down there. By Sat. the walleye seemed to have moved out of that area. Benthook and I caught some on Sun. in the Indian Bay area along with some fat perch.

Did get blown off the water Thursday afternoon. Didn't get off the lake in time to avoid the nasty waves and wind. Seemed to be the pattern the whole time there. Nice in the morning with big cells building by noon then nice in the evening again. All in all we had a lot of fun and learned a few things about the lake.

I did see tube dude and I think I even saw PackFan drive by me at the gas station. If anyone sees me out there in a white Glastron with a bimini top, small German Shepard looking dog and a small Johnson kicker stop by and say howdy. I don't mind if you drop some hints either. Still learning that lake.
