Trolling questions

I am a new fisherman in California. I have some questions about trolling for trout.

I fish on Lake Camanche in California. I have been following their reports, and they seem to be specific of how deep to troll.

I assume you gauge depth by speed and weight of your rig. Does anyone have a good rule of thumb for how to determine your depth? Any tips for how I would troll at 35-50 feet with an Apex or Ex-Cel lure?

At that depth you need to get a down rigger. Some can be bought for alittle over $100.00
