I went to my uncle's cabin on Lake Shafer in Monticello, Indiana yesterday and he taught me how to fish. I caught some smaller fish but at the very end of the day, I managed to catch a bass a little bit shorter than one foot.
Excuse the pun, but I'm hooked =)
I need some good beginner gear. I want to go to different fishing spots over this summer and fish with my dad or friends. I'm not looking for any specific fish, I just want to have a good time. I don't have anything already, so I'd need anything you guys would suggest (what rod, reel, hooks, etc.). I'm not too sure how the rods work, but I'm left-handed. I turn the rod with my right hand though... So I'm not sure if that's normal or left-handed. Sorry for being such a noob =(.
Another thing is which is more effective for general fishing: live bait or plastic bait?

1. Live bait is the most effective.. always. Some will argue it increases the rate of fish mortality... but it works.
2. Ugly Stick Lite 7' rod
Shimano Sedona 2500 spinning reel
8lb. test Trilene line
3. I recommend Mepps spinners (lure) to everyone... they are easy to fish with and they work.
If you are using live bait get some hooks that come pre-attached to fluorocarbon line and use those for minnows/worms/leeches.
Have fun!!!!

First of all welcome to the fishing world. Ill try to talk you through as much as i can but its hard to say it all on this so ill do my best. If you get the chance go to an outdoor store and talk to someone there, they know what there talking about and they can walk you through it and explain terms. DON'T go to walmart to get advice most of the time they don't know alot but you can buy supplies there they have a good selection.
1.The difference in reels- The 2 main reels you should look at buying are spincast and spinning. the spincast reels are the ones that you cant see the line in the reel. They are very easy to take care of and are the least expensive. Its the red and gold reel.
The other reel is a spinning reel. it is a little harder to learn how to use but its a better reel than a spincast reel. they really don't need any care unless you want too. the rod has the loops on it that start large and get smaller. I recommend this reel and its the gray and silver reel. and btw most reels are right handed but most of the spinning reels you can switch the side with the handle.
2.The other stuff you will need is bobbers, weights, and any hooks will work but remember you don't need big hooks to catch big fish so get middle sized ones, and that should work for everything.lures i'm going to stay out of cause one i'm into that i wont stop but just get a few of them. also you want to grab some worms. And every thing i said can be bought at walmart cause everyone has one close but i still suggest going to a sporting goods store.
3.I found 2 reels that would be good beginner rods and reels. the first is a zebco 33 it has three lures and has line on it.
the next is a mitchell pure fishing spinning rod and reel. i suggest this one and it comes with some powerbait. i think this has line on it but if not i would put 12 lb line on it and have someone who knows how to put it on or you wont have any fun fishing.
both of these rods and reels would work for everything you need it to and can both be found at walmart. i hope i helped you out a little bit and spend some time one the internet doing some research because the more you know the more fish you will catch and if you have any questions feel free to ask me and if not have fun fishing
