well fish hound and i went to starvation got there around 7. i was first to launch as i am kicking out i cast and right away a hit its a 8" smallie. made it out deeper and was getting hit but no hook up for awhile then bam a 14" perch i found them so i tried to stay where they were but it was a windy day so no luck staying there. so i kicked and found another perch 13". wind still blown so i couldnt stay in that spot either. so 2 toad perchies isnt bad, i feel i would have done better if there was no wind. fishhound got a wicked leg cramp kicking out and decided to shore fish and found some smallies in some rocks.

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you found a couple of good perch, but sorry about the wind. Also sorry about Houndman. That will learn him to spend too much time in boats and to neglect his floatology.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Two things that greatly help at Starvation: 1. Good sonar to help find the fish. 2. A marker buoy to mark them so that you can maintain close visual reference. When the wind blows it is impossible to maintain position using only shoreline features and triangulation. Sometimes being only a few feet off the school or "honey hump" can mean the difference between fish and frustration.[/#0000ff]

Here's something you MIGHT want to try...I got some of that 200#(?) test cord, and tied a nut off of a box car from the railroad (must be at LEAST 5-6 lbs +/-) to the cord and I use it for an anchor. It don't hold you ALL the time but for the most part is SLOWS the drift alot!! It all rolls up on the nut and is quite handily stored in my front pouch. If I get tired or want to move up wind I just barely clear it off the bottom, paddle a ways, and let it down again. For me it works like a charm. My friend tried to one up me and used one of his downrigger balls, and that seemed to work good, until it got hung and he lost a $20 ball!! It's amazing how well a 5-6lb weight will hold a float tube in place, and for some reason I have NEVER lost my NUT!! No pun intended!
I have used it in wind that I should have given up and headed in...but stayed, caught fish, and for the most part waited out the wind....EXCEPT for that one time....and I did have to walk a good mile or two!

[#008000]Hey Lingwall,[/#008000]

[#008000]It was great to get out and fish with you ! Too bad about the wind. But, at least we did get into some fish - even if it wasn't a lot or exactly what we had anticipated. Those were some real nice perch you took home. [/#008000]

[#008000]Yes, we launched at Rabbit Gulch - kind of just past that little camp ground. [/#008000]

[#008000]I only made it out for 15 minutes or so before I got the leg cramped up. I was trying to fight the wind and stay on top of the submerged rocks to play with the bass that were there. Then, as I was turning in the waves for another pass, my leg decided to let me know that it had been floatologically neglected this year and that I need to have a more well rounded excersize regime for all those "way too seldom used" fishing muscles. I had to limp back in and try to walk it off as I fished the shoreline - at least there were some bass in the rocks there to play with so I was able to keep myself occupied while Lingwall did the wave and wind dances between the bouys. [#008000]Actually, I was rather surprised that I was able to get into a few fair sized bass in the rocks right there as I've never done too well at that reservoir fishing for them. But then again, I don't usually go to Starvation in order to target bass. They were not giants, but on light gear meant for finessing up perch or walleyes, it was a lot of fun.[/#008000]

[cool][#0000ff]Bummer about the leg cramps. That can certainly put a damper on the enjoys. I am prone to that affliction myself if I write too many checks my aging body can't cash. I always carry a little bottle of "Leg Cramp Pills". TubeBabe gets them online and they really help. Once I start to feel the tightness, I dissolve a couple in my mouth and within a couple of minutes I am good to go.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Of course, taking pills after you have a severe cramp is kinda like taking a seasick pill after you start "chumming". That little pill ain't gonna hold it down.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Not surprised you caught smallies from shore there. There are a series of rocky points that extend out away from shore that are still submerged. The smallies love them because they are right in the weedline and full of crawdads. Within a month they will be completely dry and out of the water. But then that long rocky ridge that runs parallel to shore will be exposed and the fish all move out along it.[/#0000ff]
