Arrived at Strawberry Marina at 6:30 a.m. and headed out into the middle of the reservoir where we did well 2 weeks ago. Fished with 4 downriggers. We graphed a lot of fished between 20 & 30 feet; however, could not get many to bite. We trolled this area for 2 to 2.5 hours and caught 5 slot cutts - all on the small side. The fishing was nothing like it was two weeks ago.
Being discouraged we trolled over to the meadows. Once we crossed over the old dike we began picking up rainbows on a ghost LC pointer at 25 feet. The pointers were doing OK for an hour. I was switching out my other bugs every 15 - 20 minutes if I was not picking anything up on them - try all different colors and lures/squids & etc.
Finally by about 10:30, we found what they wanted - anything orange. Did not matter if it was a spoon or a squid, but it had to be orange.
There were three of us fishing, we ended up catching 37 fish. The bigest cutt was only 20 inches. Must of caught 10-12 nice rainbows (brought 6 home - they were all around 2 pounders) We had at least another 10 - 15 fish on, that got off on their way to the boat. We did not boat a single koke today - not sure where they went. We did have one nice fish on, my friend's wife started reeling the fish in and couldn't - I thought it was going to pull her overboard. She handed the pole to her husband because she couldn't even crank the reel & during the transfer, the fish got a way.
We also caught alot of 7-8 inch cutts, never caught this many small cutts before in a single day.
We left the reservoir at 1:30 p.m.
Had the first 2 hours been normal, 10 fish/hour, we would of had a tremendous day. It was nice that we were able to turn a rather slow morning into a successful day.
