Lake Erie Coastal Management Assistance Grants Available
#1
SANDUSKY, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Office of Coastal Management is accepting grant applications for projects that will help preserve, protect and enhance Ohio's Lake Erie coastal resources.

Coastal Management Assistance Grants are available to communities, local governments, non-profit organizations, state agencies, planning commissions and educational institutions. Funding priorities for this round of grants will focus on the development of watershed balanced growth plans in coordination with the Ohio Lake Erie Commission and the implementation of coastal nonpoint management measures of state-endorsed watershed action plans. Priority will also be given to education and outreach projects that address coastal issues related to sustainable development.

The Office of Coastal Management dedicates a portion of its federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration funding to the Coastal Management Assistance Grant program. Applicants must provide at least 50 percent of the project's total funding.

Applications and guidelines for the Coastal Management Assistance Grants program are available on the "Grants" link at www.ohiodnr.com/coastal or by contacting the Office of Coastal Management at 419-626-7980. Grant applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Friday, November 20. The grants, which are awarded on a competitive basis, will be announced in the spring of 2010.

Grant guidelines, writing tips and sample applications will be presented during two workshops: Thursday, October 8, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cleveland Watercraft Office, 1150 E. 49th Street in Cleveland and Friday, October 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Erie MetroParks Osborn Park Frost Center, 3910 Perkins Ave. in Huron. Contact Yetty Alley at ODNR's Office of Coastal Management by October 1 to register for a workshop.

ODNR will award at least $250,000 for this round of grants. It has awarded more than $2.97 million in Coastal Management Assistance Grants since the Ohio Coastal Management Program began in 1997. A list of all previous grant awards is available online by selecting the "Grants" link at www.ohiodnr.com/coastal.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources seeks to ensure a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
