Fly fishing in the Uintahs - where to go?
#1
I am planning on taking a trip to do some fly fishing in the Uintah mountains. I have a new float tube I want to try out on a lake up there, but there are so many little ones up there, I don't know what to try first. I want to do some fishing on the Provo river as well. Any suggestions on good spots to fish up there where I could camp close by? Thanks!

My answer---Lake Hopping. Try hitting as many as you can and see what you can catch. I recommend the following flies:

olive woolly bugger
renegade
royal wullff

If you want to stop at one lake I would recommend mirror lake, but like I said hop the lakes and have a little fun.[Smile]

Take the Mirror Lake Hwy, fish the upper provo river below Trial Lake. You can then put your tube in at Trial Lake, Mirror Lake, and any of the other nearby lakes.

I fished Trial lake twice in the past month using a size 18ish renegade from the short right by the 2 cabins. First time was mid-afternoon and the water was glassy, got a hit on the fly at least every other cast. Second time was windy, drizzly so not easy to see rises, but still fished on top using the same stuff and had pretty consistent rises--say every 4-5 casts when letting it sit and blow in the breeze, it picked up when I'd strip it back. I'm sure some kind of an emerger tied on as a dropper would have done great. Wish I had a float tube both times to get out away from the shore and other fishermen . Have fun.

Trial, Mirror.....wear out those 12"ers! Find an albino and cast anywhere near it, WAMO! Everytime. Fun for numbers and a beautiful setting. Good luck!

The albino's are a hoot--I couldn't get 1 to rise to a fly in either trip, but they're so easy to see that I'd cast to one and fixate on him--then the camouflaged rainbows would come out of nowhere, hit the fly and be gone before I could react.
