Cattin' Report for UL 9-25-09
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Had an invite to join ripnlip on his pontoon today. No, not the float tube kinda pontoon. His is a big 24 foot pontoon BOAT. Yeah, right. Me on a boat.

Launched that big bad floating platform at Lindon just before 7 AM. Still kinda darkish. Headed for ripnlip's favorite early spot. Pulled up into the shoreline reeds and got into a whitie fest. Every cast with any kind of lure brought in a feisty white bass. Nothing over 11 inches, but provided a supply of bait and a few for the scampi pan.

No kitties at the first spot we tried. Moved a bit and started getting some "pop and drops". Danged white bass messin wit da bait. WRONGO. Set the hook on a couple of those pesky whities and they pulled back hard. Kitties. Again, nothing big, but nice eaters in the 16" to 20" range.

Tried two or three more stops at Walts favorite cat hangouts. Most were in water shallower than 3 feet. Got only a few more small cats. Have had reports of larger fish in deeper water but even when we tried drifting in deeper water we did no better.

Beautiful day on the water. Had one water skier and a couple of PWCs that could not stand seeing us enjoying ourselves in solitude so they came closer than necessary. And their loud whoops definitely called our attention to them so we could see that they were having a great time.

Only light breezes at any time during the day, with flat calm most of the time. Great to meet Walt and to be a guest on his great boat. Sure glad he had a big motor and an electric bow mount trolling motor. I would hate to have to move that big thing around with my fins.

We both had other things calling us back home so we did not make a long day of it. Got the pontoon trailered and both headed home just after noon.

For those thinking about doin' some cattin' on Utah Lake, it seems that the weather has laid down a bit and at least some cats are moving back in closer to shore for awhile. Water was fairly clean with temps in the mid sixties. That is plenty comfy for kitties. Should be good until the fall weather front comes in as forecast next week. After that the temps will probably drop a bit more and the fish will be deeper. The upside will be that the walleyes should start to get more active.

Thanks for the Post tubedude! Looks like it was a good day on the water overall. Ivan and I will be hitting the lake for some White bass n Cats in about an hour...And if we get into them you can bet we will post it. We are planning on lindon or AF. Fresh bait n monnows. tandem jig rig for whites. Thanks for your awesome advice and willingness to help us "learners" out.

[#0000ff]Good luck tonight. Looks like it might be decent weather. Hope Ivan can catch another 24 inch walleye like he did at Lindon. That was a great fish and it was great that he released it too. He is a good young man and an improving fisherman. And, you are a great mentor to him. Keep up the good work.[/#0000ff]

Looks like a fun change for you for a day. I too was out on the lake today. In between jobs with the economy so allows for the time to fish. Tough life I know. Anyway hit the knolls again for 3 hours. They are in around 5-8 feet as normal and thick right on the point back into the bay. Caught 8 and missed that many more. Went through all my minnows and kick back in on calm water. Nice change from the other day. Biggest cat when 33 inches but was a skinny male and only pegged the scale at a little over 7. The rest where healthy fat females at 4-6 pounds. No whities. Been hard to find them out by the knolls lately. Any hints on where they are out there?? I echo your comment on the great day on the water. Perfect temp and calm!!

Sorry no pics. Got to get a new camera.

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you had a better day today. Sounds like you had them dialed in just right. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Most independent reports I have been getting confirm that the bigger fish are in water deeper than 5 feet. That is the way it was last year. Had a couple of great trips for larger fish after the first of October. And the fish were in 7 to 8 feet of water straight out off the rocky cliffs.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That being said, there are also some good sized cats coming from 3 -4 feet of water at Lincoln Beach and from inside American Fork Boat Harbor. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Hard to beat the Knolls for tubers and tooners. A lot less boat traffic and usually some pretty decent fishing within reasonable kicking distance. Because the slope is faster it does not take as long a swim to find the deeper water.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Good luck on the job situation. My sis in law just got laid off today from a job in which she was recently rated at over 100 percent efficiency and had been there a LOOOOOOOONG time. Seems like nobody is immune from the fallout of hard times.[/#0000ff]

I do have proof Pat was on a boat!

Thanks for the kind words. Never have I seen it put more eloquently that my spots suck![blush][blush]

It was really nice to finally meet and get to fish with a legend. well, in my mind anyway. your information, willingness to share information and your overall "good people" attitude makes for great company. i look forward to doing it again and again. Sorry we didn't catch your "smoker", but we did manage to boat a nice mess of fish.

If not for your keen Eye and attention to detail, we might not have captured that "cloud cover".

If i get time this week, i find that old tube and drag it down, see if it still floats.

was a beautiful day on the water with good company. i really enjoyed it.

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks fer the kindly comments, Walt. I did REALLY enjoy my first boating trip since...well, maybe the ark. And, only us two animals.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Overall it was one of those days when even if we had not caught fish we could have rightfully claimed to have enjoyed the trip...almost. Always better when there are fish involved.[/#0000ff]
