Willard Reprise 9-25-09
#1
[cool] I fished Willard this morning - first time since I moved out of state in '91 - wow has it been that long?[crazy]

7:00AM launch in 66 degree water. It was a beautiful morning! There were a few shadlets feeding on midges, and several herds of buglemouths milling around the marina. I soaked a piece of carp meat on one rod while tossing a piece of plastic with the other. Nobody wanted to play with my plastic, but I picked up my first cookie cutter cat as I neared the end of the channel. And in short order, I whacked another playful kitty on one of Tubedudes red/chart leadhead favorites. Then things settled down a bit.

I began working my way toward the feed lot and decided to move in closer to the dike to see what the watery brush looked like. Bing, a nice 13" Crappie. I would like to have filled my basket with several of them, but not today. That one slab must have sent word out to family and friends.

I fished my way down to the feed lot and back again picking up more kitties from 15"-18". Not fast, but enough to make it worth while. By noon, the bite had dropped right off so I decided to head in. There were quite a few boaters beginning to show up.

The channel was packed with fish from 7'-12' deep and some were pretty good sized. Maybe they were carp, I dunno? But none of them were interested in what I was serving. I messed around for the better part of an hour investigating the channel and marina.

I talked to one angler at the fish cleaning station who had one wiper in his posession. From his report and what I observed fishing was pretty slow for most.

I finished up taking home 7 Cats and one Crappie. All in all, a very fine time.[cool]

I'm pretty sure there are at least two left so the population is sustainable. . . .[Wink]

[cool][#0000ff]Nice work. When those kitties are on the prowl they hit jigs pretty good. Nice crappie too. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As the water cools in October and into November the fishing for all species gets better and better. Might be a good spot for our next attempt at a tubers floatilla and fish fry.[/#0000ff]
