Rematch at the Willard Bay Canal
#1
I had such a good time fishing at Willard Bay the other day and was thinking about that 30 incher and heading back up there when Jerry called and said he had some new lures he wanted to try.

We got there about 1:15 PM and was on the water by 1:30. There was just a slight ripple to the water. Temp 73.

Headed over for the NE corner by the dike... and hooked up immediately. We already hooked about 15 wipers when Bassaholic floated by to say hi...

We hung around for awhile, while the bite was on and Jerry was doing a great job donating his selection of lures to the natives...(wipers) and probably lost 5 lucky crafts...and several other rattle baits.

Not sure exactly how may wipers we managed to catch...but we had over 8 double hook-ups...and after the wipers ripped the hooks off my lucky craft we decided to call it a day...go clean our catch before the mosquito attack and head for home...probably close to 5:30. [fishin]

Great job. Being someone who has never caught a wiper any advice on what to use or where would be much appreciated. So far you are the man for the wipers this fall. PM me if your willing to share any tips. Again great job.

Read the two reports and look at the pictures...

We worked in water from 11 to 9' deep under the boat and cast to shore, most fish came from water under 7' deep...I hope this helps...We didn't fish any boils or did we look for them, we fished the shad....

Had a great time out with you and your family. Wish we could have gotten some more tigers at Newton though. Next time I will bring my boat also and some of your family can be in my boat to share the load. I can kick myself for not taking any of the wipers home. I thought about that last nite after I left your house. Tell Holly I am sorry she has to clean all those..... At one time we had a triple and even 4 fish on at the same time. Thanks for the adventure of willard at dusk.

If your fishing the right place like cliff is saying your on the fish, Myself and my sisters crew where south of him and we caught fish also, about 7-8. I heard he was doing well and was parked on the spot for quiet awhile, I seen him leave and three other boats got on his spot,About an hour or a little more all he77 broke loose and we fished nice big boils for about two hours, I don't know how many we caught but I was averaging a fish every 2-3 minutes for two hours! You have to fight them get them to the net and unhook them, It was crazy and was the best I have seen this year. We also caught three nice crappie only one to the boat, and my broth-in-law got a walleye about twenty inches.
So he isn't the only one catching wipers.[Wink] but with his posts sure made it easier to find the fish. Thanks Cliff![fishin] we fished in 10 feet of water casting into 5-7 feet of water, and reeled slowwwwww! I didn't get any pics because my camera is in the boat with dead batteries,I thought I lost it at the dav's event, next time I will. Holly has a few of the catch we kept though.
here's the pic. not limits but I really didn't have time to count the fish so we started to throw them back. These are my sisters and my boats keep. mmmmm fish taco's

I did not find the spot on the spot...Dan at fish tech did, but by talking with him and others that have coffee there we know why or we think we know why the wipers are there...

This is what we did to come up with and why we think the wipers was there...

First and most that corner or spot gets lots of nice warm sun witch makes the food the shad like...

And in that area there is humps and brush rocks and more for the shad to hide in...

Third there is lots and lots of small shad + with the humps and brush you can't troll that good, but with deep water reel close for the wipers to catch the shad when they move around...
And the fisherman was not fishing that spot as much as the open water...In this spot when a boat had the gas motor running they all but stopped feeding or would move out or to deep water...(they don't like the sound)

The wipers move around and that spot has three high sides with one deep side to trap the shad up against...

The more food the wipers have the better and easier to catch them...

The cuts at the berry are the same this time of year working the chubs in the fall, the stripers at Powell, the bass at the Nell all act the same....

Find the food and match the hatch you catch the fish...

Cliff, I was throwing a double willow leaf silver spinnerbait for bass and was slaying them.... One guy in a little red boat ran over my line with a wiper on and cut me off and took my spinner, then I tied on a gold willow leaf spinner and slayed them again......

was it In the area we was fishing???

Some times with fish that school like the wiper and stripers if you get one to chase and take the lure the rest will do the same...And the more food the more they want...

It sure gets fun when you find the spot on the spot to fish...

Not to answer his question but yes it was in the area you where fishing,Directly south of where you where,The wipers where hanging on a drop off. lots of weeds and cover shallow,I think you are correct about boat noise and the wipers tend to go deeper as the boat traffic in creases, but still can be caught by a bait that is slow reeled of the cover into deeper water keeping it just off the bottom,at least that's is what I was doing, the wipers where on the drop off ambushing shad as they came out of the cover trying to get to deeper water.
with the water cooling, prey and predator are moving shallower to get into the warmer water as the day time sun warms it up,like you where stating earlier. I agree with you on why they are there at this time and not at other times.typical fall pattern for the wipers as I have always caught them in that area this time of year.
