I'm still a new face in Fishville and last night something magical happened. I discovered the fun of autumn trout fishing on a spinner. From 5:30pm to dark I had the best fishing of my entire life on a Mepps Aglia #3 in Rainbow Trout. First time I've ever caught a fish on a spinner. In fact, spinners have been sitting in my tackle box for twenty years without ever seeing water because I tried them once or twice and couldn't see past the snagging they caused me. But man am I hooked now! Anyway, I mostly just wanted to encourage people to go out and try some spinners if you aren't already. For most of you, they've probably been the old stand by for as long as you could walk. But if you're intimidated by them, nows the time to let by-gones be by-gones and get after 'em!

I'm totally with you on spinners. Though I enjoy fly fishing too, I pretty much gained my current love of fishing from countless hours fishing western streams with a panther martin. I also have found the rainbow colored spinners to be quite successful, another consistent producer for me has been the brown trout fingerling pattern, and if my knowledge of trout spawns is correct, there should be some spawning browns right now[crazy]. They no longer make them any more[:/] but copper panther martins have also been great, though if I recall they still have mepps aglias in copper

Oh yes, spinners are a total blast! Magical days can happen while flipping spinners.
My go-to is a Blue Fox Vibrax # 2 in gold. After that, black, rainbow, silver, and firetiger are also good patterns of them.
There's just something about it that the fish just can't resist sometimes.

very very close on the brown spawn.... it has already started in Colorado, i watched the browns stage and then start their spawn on the Arkansas.... they have started to stage from what i can see here in UT..... any day, im thinking all we need is one more good week of cold weather.. on a side note im no biologist, this is just what i see and hear from asking around...
on another side note, are you talking about the yellow spinner with black or brown spots? if so they sell them at wal mart and have always been my go to spinner!

+ 1 FOR ME TOO Silver blade and silver body or the cutthroat pattern have always been my favorite. #2 works even in small streams, but # 1 doesnt hit the bottom as much..... Just depends on the size of the water. I always pack two rods when I fish certain rivers, in most cases the weber. I fish with a fly rod when I see fish that are either stubborn or flies are hatching and I see good action on the surface. BUT mostly as I start out I fish the fishy holes with those blue fox spinners and almost NEVER get skunked. When I drag a well placed spinner through a fishy hole and dont get a hit I will fish nymphs on the fly rod. Unless of coarse their is a good hatch or terrestrials are in season. I love fly fishin, but I got hooked on fishing when I was 12 years old and learned how to toss a spinner. Always was a blue fox. Not that I havent done well somedays with a yellow body and red spotted panther martin with a silver blade that has 2 or 3 horizontal red lines across the blade. I was double fisting the other day on the weber with a buddy and we knocked them dead.

actually it's not very yellow, but naturally colored like a brown trout fingerling but yeah there are black spots on it.
