My wife and I returned to CJ yesterday in hopes of getting into the trout one more time. It didn't disappoint. Started fishing at 1 PM and we were both limited by 3:30. Fish ranged from 14 to 18 inchers, with the exception of one dink planter. Several have had jaw bands, which qualifies you for a $1000 Idaho Power draw. Very few boats on the water, but those that were there were all catching fish on pop gear, spoons, etc. It seemed we were doing better than the others trolling a small steelhead fly at 2 mph. These fish are exceptional fighters. Set your drag loose!! Lucky Peak and Arrowrock are also producing, but not with fish as hefty as these hogs. Mike

Howdy Mike. In your last post on CJ you mentioned using a broke-back Rapala. I'm curious as to why you switched to a salmon fly this time...just trying to pick up a few trolling pointers. Also; do you have any idea how many tagged fish are in CJ? Nice fish and thanks for the report. Mike

Thanks for the update. My friend has been slaying them at Arrowrock like you mentioned. He's been bringing home some stringers of heavy fish. He's been cherry picking them to get the heavy ones. One day last week they caught 57 fish before taking their limit of 12!!!! Super simple, #6 red hook, anise marshmellow, 3/8 oz sinker. His boat setup trolls a little faster than most prefer but it's working great for him.

Slow-troll,
Yes, we switched over due to a good tip from another fisherman. The fly has some red and orange on it; a streamer-type fly, and we tip it with about 1/8 " of worm. Weight it with 1/4 weight. More fun and less tangles than the rapalas. Mike

AA,
Wow, trolling with a 'mallow. Never heard of it. I, of course, go through a lot of them off shore, but have never even thought of trolling with one. I am going to head up there next spell of dry weather, and try it off shore. It rarely fails me this time of year. Thanks for the info. Mike

Sorry; I don't know. I did hear they were catching very large trout off the bridge, but that it can be good one day and nothing for several more.
