Is there really crappie in Utah Lake? Send pics!
#1
This might be quite naive of me but are there really Crappie in Utah Lake? If you have pics please send me some as proof[Smile] Same goes for perch.

Also what other species do you think are in Utah Lake and why do you think that? I've heard that there are Lake trout in there and also small mouth bass, I wouldn't doubt there aren't other species in there that aren't very common to the lake.

I even recently heard someone say he thought there is the potential for a world record size walleye from Utah lake. does anyone concur? Whats the largest channel cat you've heard come out of there recently? Last summer I heard of quite a few 25 pounders.

Does this pic do it for ya?

Back in the infancy of fisheries management, people and agencies planted all manner of fish species into UL. Lake trout, arctic grayling, and eels, among others were dumped in there. Most, including the grayling and lakers predictably died off quickly. What remains and thrived is what you have out there now.

I have caught several perch there but sorry, no pics. I have seen pics of smallies and have talked to bassers that have caught one, but they are rare.

There are huge walleyes there, along with giant channels, but probably truth falls short of the tales that are spun about UL cats and eyes by the good ol' boy crowd.

I have accidentally caught one yellow perch (8") and one crappie (11") fishing for bass. I take my kids and nephews/nieces out there to go cat fishing. Biggest channel cat around 15 lbs. + - Nothing compared to the size of the blue cats in there [Wink]. (That is just a joke) I've heard stories of carp being in Utah Lake but it's just another fish story, caught a small brown in the Provo marina many years ago and have seen some HUGE walleyes get caught. I'd say 10 lbs.+ females. My biggest walleye was a 27" and shaped like a pencil. Lots of white bass, never caught a smallmouth...yet, a few decent largemouth and plenty of golden walleye. You never know what you're going to catch out there.
Last year fishing for bass I got snagged and pulled up a bag of stank, I was dry heaving trying to get my hook out of the burlap sack. I figured it was catfish attractant, at least that's what I tell myself.
N. pike back in the day as well as lake trout. The one place in Utah that should have crawdads and I've only seen one, go figure.

If you want to catch some crappie at UL then I'll make you a deal. My car is dead and I live off I-15 in Taylorsville. If you can get me to the water I can get you into crappie.

I don't fish there in the winter, but come this spring I'll be the guy with the 16' poles taking them one after another right in the state park.

I have no pics but crappie and perch are for sure in there. I've caught a few jigging small stuff through the ice at the harbors this year. I've been with a guy who I saw catch a pretty decent smallmouth on the lake. I've caught smallmouth a few hundred yards downstream in the Jordan.
I've seen walleye be caught that probably went 28+ inches and I bet 8-10 pounds. My oddest catch is probably a brown trout.

And if you can believe it, there are a few trout that end up in UL that come in from the Prove River.

Someone mentioned pike? Is that species for sure in UL?

During a period of time my brother work for the hatchery in Springville (early to mid 70's ) he claimed they intoduced fingerling northen pike into UL. as a trial.
I've heard of two caught. Both were caught in the early 80's and in the area now known as east bay.

Thanks for the pics! I'm convinced, especially since all the other posts state the same as you, I guess I haven't been fishing out there enough. You'd think 15+ years would be enough to realize that they are in there.
