1st Time to Chesterfield on the Hard Deck
#1
My 5 year old and I headed out to Chesterfield with hopes of hooking into that 8 pounder I always hear is lurking in there. We got to the parking lot and it was 4 degrees, with a nice breeze putting it at around -5 or so. I crossed over to the other side, way away from all the people. I was pulling the sled in about 8 inches of fresh snow, on top of 3 inches of slush. Yeah, I am waaaaaay out of shape. Got to a spot and cleared out a bunch of snow and slush, about 100 yards from the opposite shoreline. I wanted to be about 40 yards from the shore, but I was out of gas! Then came the task of drilling holes. Just when I thought I was doing okay with my O2 levels, I had to drill down the 22 inches of ice and take another break. Anyways, we got fishing and it was fast to begin with. Had fish hitting all three rods, and caught two 12 inchers right away. Then I got one on my boy's rod that was pushing 17 inches. I was fishing in different depths, but getting most of the action at about 15 feet down. I was using a worm setup (a shout out to fishingrocket), but then it just went dead after about 10 AM. I had decent hits off and on, but just couldn't hook into anything for the rest of the day. I was just happy to get out, and even happier I was with my little buddy. He's a pretty tough dude to be out in all that slush and water, in frigid temperatures - good thing we had the Ice Cube. Not to mention, he had to hang in the tent with me all day - what a test of his sanity [sly]. No regrets on the day, other than I should of borrowed my buddy's gas auger when he offered! Great day to get out, sunshine, fresh snow, but I wish I would have hooked up a little better.

Great report. Chesterfield has always had an early bite for me and then shut off.

Any day on the Hard deck is a good day. Glad to see you got your kid out. Sounds like a tough kid to survive the slush monster. Thanks for the report!
