I live in ft worth texas and going to be there in 2 weeks for a 4-5 day business trip and was wondering if there is anything near SLC that a guy can fish or fly fish from the banks that would be ok,. I am new to fly fish but thought I might try that up there wile I was there. I also have a small spinning rig if that works better. Any advice or anyone want to show a visitor around? I would return the favor if you ever get to my area. I am an avid hunter and fisherman but never been too far north like this for a trip.
Thanks and look forward to possibly hearing from someone.
Have a great weekend and get outdoors and enjoy it and be sure and share it with a kid! If we older guys don't get them involved they never willo understand what is passing them by whioe they play video games and talk on their cell phones.

most of the lakes here are froze right now. so the fly fishing a river would be the best. like what was already said, the provo river is pretty good brown trout fishery. I don't fly fish, so I don't know what flies too use, but on a spinning rod a count down #5 rapala in gold and black works good also perch is good.
you might also try the weber river, it also has good brown trout. hope this helps, later chuck

Or the Provo River between Jordanelle Res. and Deer Creek Res, or the Weber River, or the Ogden River.
Ever want to try Ice fishing? That would be pretty novel for you.
I think for starters that the lower Provo would be best for you. Easy access, lots of fish, some real big ones too. Fly or spinning can be good, I would recommend spinning because unless you can deep nymph and mend there are not many hatches to match, some very small bugs, but that is about it. Spinning gear lets you use jigs, spinners and minnow imitating lures.
Do some reading on the flyfishing board for the locations that are hot.
Keep posting and as the time draws near, maybe you can hook up with someone who can show you around.

my wife thinks I am crazy.............. I do this stupid stuff like fish, hunt and see sports when I travel. Am I really crazy.....lol
anyway was in Canada one summer 3 years ago for 13 weeks and I still talk about the fishing, hiking and stuff. the summer of a lifetime in Alberta Canada.
I remember one of the guys who took me pike fishing and his kids thought he was crazy for taking a total stranger fishing. 3 years later we still talk and he has been to Teaxs and I still promise him a whitetail or a turkey hunt if he will just come in the fall and NOT the summer like he has been. I guess I did get hjim to a Dallas Maverick game but I want him to experience the Texas outdoors like I did his country.
Anyway I wil keep reading, posting and checking back.
Thanks guys and keep your flies in the water and your hook sharp!

Many of the rivers that hold trout )like the Weber and Provo) will also cough up a lot of whitefish from their upper reaches this time of year.
Smallish nymphs on a drop shot with a small weight will usually catch them and the action can be pretty fast. They have small mouths, but feed aggressively and fight a lot like trout.

Fishing on the Provo in Provo canyon and the first few miles above Deer Creek Reservoir usually requires waders or hip boots to hit the best holes. Didn't know if you were planning on bringing or renting some.
Areas on the Provo for several miles below Jordanelle and the Weber river can be fished from the bank. Both will get midge hatches as the day warms up but your best success will be fishing nymphs for whitefish. Springbuck is right, you can catch fish on every cast once you locate the school. Best patterns are orange egg patterns (whitefish seem to be genetically programmed to hit orange), midge patterns like red serendipity and rainbow warrior, and cased caddis.
Stop by Fish Tech or Western Rivers Flyshop. They will both set you up and give you the latest info.
Good luck and pm me if you want more details. I may even go with you.

ok so this ice fishing stuff...... is it still cold enough to do this and don't you have to have a drill and lots of toher stuff I can't bring on a planewith the curent TSA rules I bet and the $75.00 baggage fee would be killer too I bet LOL? Or are there ways to do this thru someone else like a guide or how would a non local do this up there? sounds cool and I think you are right the pic would be worth a thousand words where I live heck we fish in hell all summer when it is 110 plus not including the sun and reflection on the water. We bake when we fish in July and August. That is assuming we still have enough water to launch a boat by then. Anyway is there some way for a visitor to do this and what do I need to bring. I live 8 miles from a Bass Pro and 3 miles from a cabelas so getting equipment is no problem down here. In fact if someone wants to make a fishing trip offer I can bring you some goodies from here as a token of my appreciation on this. We will just need to talk about what it is that you need from here.

Oh no need to buy a drill and everything! Just grab a fishn pole at like a store for ascheap as possible. Go to the gas station or sportsmans and get wax worms or a rig or two. And go to East Cayon or Pineview. You have to try ice fishing! Addiciting lol. If you are determed to catch a fish go to pineview and go into 15ft of water and you will catch 50+ perch!
