Fishing in Laie, Hawaii Q's...
#1
I am taking a trip to Oahu and staying near Laie (Maybe Hauula... I am still looking for a rental vacation home there in June. I am wondering if anyone has fished that area that could give me a heads up on:

1. Where to fish close to Laie area
2. What to use as far as pole and lures etc.... (Should I bring from home or buy at Costco or Walmart)
3. What fish can I expect to catch.

I have a travel company and I am arriving 4 or 5 days before the group arrives and I would like to get in some fishing if possible.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has some suggestions. MAHALO![cool]

[Smile]I take the family to Laie every other year. We stay a couple of weeks in a beach house in Laie. I found the fishing is not so good around the Laie area. This area ( and North) is known for it's big waves and beaches ( North Shore area). We found the fishing is much better on the SouthWest side of the Island - we usually charter a boat. I did notice people shore fishing with some success about 5 miles South of Laie ( sorry I forgot the small little town, but you'll see the locals fishing as you pass through the small little town on your way to Laie ( I think is called Kamualu?) They were using what looked like squid imitations in blue and pink. There is a local bait and tackle shop in the immediate area. We have caught all kinds of fish from tuna to bill fish, but most fish have been caught on the opposite side of the island.

Have fun ! I can't wait to get back to Hawaii. [Smile]

Dude, I was there a couple of years back and had a freaking blast. I replied to your UWN post with a link to my UWN report so check that for my pics.

If you're fishing from shore you can expect to catch a lot of reef fish, but I'm by NO means an expert on Hawaiian fish. Some of the locals I spoke to said Papio, Kupipi are both good eating.

As far as where......well I did most of my fishing right off the north shore cities of Waialua and Hale'iwa. Like the previous poster said waves on the north shore make shore fishing some times hard, but there are places to do it.

I didn't bring any gear but, bought a new pole and tackle from a cool little fishing shop off highway 83 in Hale'iwa.

I mostly used strips of squid I bought at a local grocery store about 1.5 to 2 feet behind a 1.5 pound weight. If it feels like you get a legitimate strong hit only to seem like you're stuck in rocks you probably hooked up with an eel and after snatching the squid it darted back into the rocks. It happened to me a bunch of times.

Man, some good times! Have fun! I had the time of my life out there.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

P.S. my favorite city on Oahu was Hale'iwa be sure to check it out.
