Casting Practice - Utah Lake 3/29
#1
[#000080]"Skunked" is such a negative term... I think I'll just eliminate it from my vocabulary! [#004080]*nods sagely*[/#004080]

SO! I was late for meeting with FishHound [#004080]*sob*[/#004080] I hate being late!
Packed up last night, all ready to go. This morning, got dressed and got breakfast - decided to see if my wormies were lively....uh, not as such. They were all shriveled AND in a blanket (yes, a whole layer!) of mold! The wax worms were all dead/shriveled, and most of them also bundled up in green fuzzy junk. Figuring I had time - as I was running just a little early at this point - to go trade them at Wal-Mart. Well, at Wal-Mart I had a bad heart arrhythmia, and had to stop and rest. BLEH! So I didn't even leave Layton until 7:30, which is when I had wanted to be to Chuck's house. And then I got lost on I-80! So I didn't end up at his house until about 8:45.
And of course the Fishing Pox attacked me again last night, so out of the 9 hours in bed, I got about 5 hours of sleep. But still got up on time, though all tuckered out now.

On the way, we talked about our pets and animals... of course, I made my usual mention of wanting a skunk. Maybe I should be saving this comment for the trip FROM the lake, and not jinx anything.
Got at the lake at about 9:30, set up and had all our poles in by 10. Water temperature was 43F (didn't check it when we left). We fished the north side of the north dike at Lindon Boat Harbor.
At 11 he caught a small mouth bass. I don't remember what color jig he was using - white or chartreuse.

The weather was decent. I didn't take off my coat, but probably could have if it wasn't for the breeze. Water was ripply - not quite choppy.

I caught a rock (the hook was stuck, and I couldn't get it out of the water, so Chuck reeled it in for me... nice fist-sized chunk of solidified dirt!). I also caught a weed a bit earlier than that, that I could bring in myself.
I used a crankbait (colors fading from black, gold, white..."chub"ish), neon green marabou - which I lost on the 3rd cast, as my knot came undone, white and neon green diamond shaped thing (of course, now I forget what it's called), and a pink jig. I couldn't even catch anything with a worm to go with the jig. So at 2 P.M., I finally gave up.
After I gave up, I went to watch Chuck lose 3 jigs in about 5 minutes on the south side of the dike, and then HE gave up, and we went bye-bye.

I go beddy-bye now!

Good details on the worms ....yuck[Wink]!!!

It can be tough on UL in the early months. All the critters are still thinking of wakin up, and they are not quite ready to play full force. Glad to hear about the rock fish as well as a few other green things tho. Casting practice is always good. Any day out on the water is a good one.

Just think of it as you having to get skunked once, so now you are done with that. [cool]

Hope better luck will come, I am sure it will....you have TubeDude on your side....good things are sure to happen.

Happy fishin',

Shawn

[#000080]Speaking of critters waking up, there were a couple water rats (muskrats?) swimming around. And then there were itty-bitty rodents running around me on the rocks.
I forgot my camera, not that there was really anything worth taking pictures of...hardly any birds - maybe 3 little flocks went over in the first couple hours, then the sky was empty (except for clouds...lots of those!)

Yup, Muskrats, they are everywhere and between them and the carp there is seldom a boring moment. Fun to watch. For your next trip consider bountiful....we have been a few times and have had a blast each time....trout a cat and carp.
