Wanted to see if the ice is making any progress on Newton so I drove out there after work to take a peek. Still a good sheet of ice on it but it varies about 5 to 20 feet off shore. Threw a couple fist sized rocks onto the ice and most of them broke through or at least sunk into the slush.
Getting closer and closer for a boat and the wait might kill me.
Anyone else know any other lakes that people might still think are iced over but are thawing fast should post them.
Just thought I'd let anyone who wants t know...

I went out the Newton yesterday and noticed the same think. I decided to throw some nice sized crankbaits to see if and thing was lurking in the shallows but no such luck. I'm excited to get out there and do some fishing!
I heard Mantua is getting ready to come off as well but I haven't been down there lately to see for my self. Other then that though I'm not sure.

I drove by Mantua Saturday. No one was on the ice and I didn't see any open water. That doesn't mean it is solid. It could very well be rotten ice. I didn't have time to stop and throw some rocks out on it to see if they would break through...

I drove by and checked today too. It's blowing pretty hard out there, and even at midnight it's in the 50s, maybe it will help. Hopefully we'll get a fair amount of rain from this storm tomorrow and it will melt some off too.

Anyone heard whats going on at Porcupine? THe DNR site say it was still 16 inches of ice with an 18 inch gap between the shore and ice but that was two weeks ago. Just wondering if anyone has been up there more recent than that.

I was up there yesterday and the ice is coming off. About 20 feet of open water around the edges of the upper end and about 200 yds of open water at the inlet. The lower half doesnt have nearly as much open water. 3-4 feet along the edges with some of the cutbacks being open. Ice off is happening now.

Dang, and I thought it snowed bad out where I live. The forecast doesn't look too good either, I'm getting grumpy.

I hope so, it just changes so much this time of year, and usually for the worse. Next Wednesday was looking good, and now according to the National Weather Service the forecast temps are creeping down into the 40s with a chance of precipitation now. Those nice days in mid March were such a tease [:/] Oh well, you're right about the snow melting though, it's already about half gone from my yard.

Despite the cold weather, I don't think it will be long before the ice comes off of Newton. I drove by again today, and there was about a ten foot seam of open water all the way across the reservoir. Now the wind can get the ice moving around and bash it all up.

Hopefully we have another good wind storm to push that ice around.
We should hit it up together when its ice off, eh?

Well we have a couple more storms coming through so hopefully they'll break it up. I'm always up for hitting Newton, especially since it's just down the road. I'm usually only available weekdays before 4 pm though.

Newton is completely ice free now. Apparently quite a few people noticed this as there was a fair number of fishermen there. I tossed jerkbaits and spinnerbaits for about 30 minutes with no success. I thought about moving to the other end of the reservoir, but I decided that the yard needs tending more than I need casting practice. I'm sure a couple of weeks of consistent weather will get things moving though.

There's absolutely no ice whatsoever on the entire reservoir. I'm getting anxious for some musky and bass. Trout can only keep me busy so long.

Thanks for the update. I figured it had to be ice off real soon. I might have to try and hit it up after work saturday or after church sunday...
Mantua is ice free now... (or at least I can't see any from the highway)
