WDFW seeks nominees for focus group on marine fish in the western Strait

OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking nominations through May 28 for membership on its new Area 4B marine fish focus group for the western Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Up to 12 qualified individuals will be chosen to serve on the ad hoc focus group, which will meet periodically through the end of December. The group is responsible for providing guidance on the development of new management alternatives and objectives for recreational and commercial marine fish fisheries in waters stretching from the mouth of the Sekiu River west to the Bonilla-Tatoosh line in Marine Area 4 (Neah Bay).<br />
"We'd like to put together a diverse group of people who can help us develop recommendations for managing marine fish resources in the western Strait," said Craig Burley, fish division manager for WDFW.<br />
In August, the department is scheduled to seek public comment on the recommendations developed in conjunction with the focus group, said Burley. WDFW staff also is scheduled to brief the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission - a nine-member citizen panel that sets policy for department - on the proposed alternatives in October.<br />
Earlier this year, the commission requested that the department seek additional public input on bottomfish management in the western Strait of Juan de Fuca - waters sometimes referred to as Marine Area 4B.<br />
Nominees to the focus group do not have to be affiliated with a specific organization. Nominations must be submitted in writing with the following information:<br />
"¢ Nominee's name, address, telephone number and email address.<br />
"¢ Relevant experience and reasons for wanting to serve as a member of the advisory group.<br />
"¢ Nominee's effectiveness in communication.<br />
"¢ Name and contact information for any individual or organization submitting a nomination.<br />
