Sarasota, Fla. (May 18, 2010) - Cameron Schurlknight, of Venice, Louisiana, caught a redfish and speckled sea trout totaling 53.5 inches in length to secure a win in the IFA Kayak Tour Presented by Hobie Fishing at Sarasota on May 16. The event was the ninth regular-season event overall and second in the Florida West Division for the first-year fishing tour.
Schurlknight's 24.5-inch sea trout bested the field for the largest sea trout taken during the tournament, while his 29-inch redfish pushed his two-limit over the top to secure the victory. The total length of Schurlknight's two fish gave him a 3.25-inch advantage over second-place finisher, Tony Lai, winning him a Hobie Mirage Pro-Angler Kayak valued at $2,399.
Fishing with the IFA for four years now, Schurlknight boated 6 fish on the day, using Super Spook Jr. on trout and Exude Darts for redfish.
Lai measured a 30.25-inch redfish and a 20-inch speckled seas trout for a total length measurement of 50.25 inches on his way to a second-place finish and a new Hobie Mirage Outback kayak, valued at $1,749. Third-place finisher, Jason Stock, of Bradenton, Fla., boated 20 fish on the day, fishing with a Super Spook Jr. and D.O.A. Gold Split Tail. His 29.5-inch redfish and 20-inch speckled seas trout totaled 49.5 inches, winning the local angler a Hobie Quest kayak, valued at $949.
With the largest redfish of the competition, fourth-place finisher Brian Nelli won $200. First-place finisher Schurlknight also took him $200 in prize money for the largest sea trout, thanks to his 24.5-inch catch.
Each of the Cabela's IFA Redfish Tour 18 regular-season events will commence on Saturday with the newly formed IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie Fishing contested the following day (Sundays). In its inaugural season, the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie will feature 18 regular-season, catch-photograph-release events across six different division (mirroring the IFA Redfish Tour format, location and scheduling) as well as extremely lucrative payouts and expanded fishing opportunities for non-motorized fishing crafts.
The redfish/trout tournament will pay twenty places (based on a 100 boat field) plus Big Redfish, Big Trout and Junior Angler Awards. The winner will take home a Hobie Mirage Pro-Angler valued at $2399, 2nd place prize will be a Hobie Mirage Outback, valued at $1,749 and 3rd place a Hobie Quest, valued at $949.
The IFA Redfish and IFA Kayak Tours continues to draw redfish anglers from Texas to the Carolinas and beyond, offering anglers the opportunity to compete in six different divisions, each offering a three-event regular season. Low entry fees for the one-day, regular-season tournaments allows anglers to fish close to home and minimize expenses, while still being a part of a premier inshore, catch-and-release redfish tournament organization. Teams fishing any three of the IFA's 18 regular-season events are automatically qualified for a no-entry-fee championship event, pitting qualifiers from each of the six divisions for money and prize packages, as well as a shot at the coveted Cabela's Overall Divisional Team of the Year Award for the six regular-season division winners.
