Colorado River Trout 6/1/10
#1
Hit up the river this week with Thewhizzle. Launched @ Willow beach about 5:30 am and boated down river a ways. Hit up a couple coves and did awesome for trout that were all upwards of 1 pound+. Non stop action the whole morning. Caught em on spinners mostly. A couple were taken on flies. That water is COOOOLLDDD!!!

Looks like alot of fun.

I went out to Nelson's Landing for some cliff jumping yesterday and I can definitely confirm that the water is COLD!

Do you know if the the trout stay near Willow or do they move all the way down through Lake Mohave?

Another question!?!

From what I can tell the water below the damn is quite a bit cooler than whats at the lake. Also, the water is clearer with greater visibility that you see at Mead and just plain looks more inviting (cleaner).

Is this purely by virtue of the current? Is there another explanation?

It seems strange that the water is cleaner and cooler than Mead when it is actually coming from Mead.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks and fish on

Im sure some stay by willow. A fly fishing buddy of mine caught a 4 lber right next to the marina last year. If you can find the schools, I am sure that they are all the way down to Mojave. We did well down river 10-15 minutes.

The water is clearer and cooler because the water that is released into the river comes from the bottom of lake mead (which is really cold and sediment-free). That section of the river used to be muddy and riddled with sandbars before the damn was built. Once constructed it changed the whole ecosystem to a cold, clear river. This contributed to the razorback sucker's demise in the river system.

Thanks for the answers, Sil. That makes perfect sense. I knew there had to be a a fairly simple explanation.
