First fishing trip to Mead
#1
I am planning on making my first attempt at fishing lake Mead next weekend, June 11th and 12th. I am going to try some shore fishing for striper.

What I would like to do is get there before sundown, fish from dusk til whenever and then just crash on my cot in the back of the truck or something. Get up next a.m. early fish a little then head home.

Any tips on where a guy could shore fish with reasonable chance of success, and be able to camp in truck overnight without getting ticketed by rangers (or rolled by muggers) would be appreciated.

P.S. would also appreciate info on where to buy bait. Anchovy, or whatever.

thanks, TD

Hi Stikbow,

The best hours for fishing are usually one hour before and after sunrise/sunset. Other than that, it's getting super hot during the day so your plan would keep you out of the severe heat. I usually prefer to go out just before sunset and fish through the night then leave around 8am or whenever the bite stops.

I'm not sure where you'd be able to get your truck close to shore but be careful driving close to the waterline, it tends to be real soft.

I usually buy Sardines at Walmart (the bags say anchovies, but they are sardines.) I've found anchovy at Laker Plaza, bait is a bit more expensive there.

I'm sure somebody will chime in with a suggestion for location.

Good luck and let us know how you do. I will probably go out that weekend since it is my birthday. Gosh I'm getting old. haha

Thanks for the response Erawk. I don't really need to get truck to water, just want to be somewhere legal to camp that is not a "campground".

I will definitely let you all know how I do. I have been a "lurker" on this site, and any chance I have of catching anything is completely due to the info I have gotten from this site.

boulder harbor is a good bet for vehicle camping you can stay up to 7 days. but be fore warned if u plan on a camp fire bring your own wood as collecting it is illegal in the lake mead national recreation area. good luck on your trip let us know how you did. tight lines.......

Here is a link to a good post about sardines/anchovies. Pay attention to The Whizzles post on how to hook the bait.

Kingman wash is still a good bet. No wake markers have been installed and the party people have gone away. This has some nice drop-offs from shore to about 30ft.

Cross over the dam turn left at mile marker 2 go 4 miles down the dirt road to the water (two-wheel drive okay). Nevada license is good on the AZ side too with a $3 river stamp.
