lake mead catfishes
#1
Hey guys,

I've been catching a lot of catfishes in the lake lately. There seems to be 2 different kinds. Black ones that usually get pretty darn big (caught a 10 pounder few weeks ago) and brown ones with skinnier body and FAT stomachs. I never keep them cuz I don't know how to cook 'em, but I heard the channel cats are pretty good. Which one is the channel cat? and what's the other type called?

If they have forked tails then they are Channel Catfish. If the tails are more square they are Bullheads. The biggest bullheads on record are less than 8lbs while Channel Cats can get quite large with the world record being 58 lbs. Average is 2 to 4 lbs so a 10 pounder is a good one.

Lake Mead is said to harbor some bullhead, but in 20 years of catfishing with my dad, we have never seen one. The majority of cats in Mead are either white cats or channels. Juvenile channels are light white to olive green with black spots. As they grow, they loose the light color and turn a pretty solid dark with a lighter belly, like the picture above. White cats look very similar to channels, but juveniles lack the black spots. They can almost be silvery white in clearer water. They do not grow as large as a channel either.

When male channel cats are spawning there heads get swollen and turn black. I caught a couple last week from shore and there heads were still black.
