Gillnetting Jordanelle & Deer Creek
#1
Helped gillnet Jordanelle this morning. Missed yesterday's haul at DC, but same schedule for next week: Tues/DC, Wed/Jord. Both start at 9am.

Two boats each pick up 4 nets, two shallow-runners, two depp-runners. One boat up Provo arm, the other up north arm. Tons of chubs answered the roll call, no surprise there. Perch mostly mid-sized, a token largie here & there, smallies of mid-sized, tho a couple upper-teeners. At least one nice brown and/or bow in each net, 20"ers.

The guys reported oodles of walleyes from DC, all sizes, and all chubby & healthy. Two 11-pounders in the mix, one from shallow Charleston, the other from deeper Wallsburg. Anxious the see the sequel next week.

Question on the gill netting for you. I've always been under the impression that gill netting doesn't kill any fish, but in your photos, it looks like i've got that backwards. Can you shed some light for me? Thanks!

gill netting kills all fish. that is why they only do it for studdies like this now. And that is in the greater U.S. not just Utah. [Wink]

Thanks for sharing. Hate to see them all tangled up in the nets but hey its for the better...hopefully.

Damn...it is sure a bummer for me to see them tangled in the net no doubt. I probably sounded quite ignorant and oblivious, but I, for some reason; just thought they'd be released some how. I do hope that they get eaten or something instead of going to waste, however.

Pardon my lack of education on gillnetting!

If you are one of the helpers they will give you some of the fish some times...

But they take all game fish for some one to eat...

Nice report!

Now for the important question. What were the biologists saying about what they found at Jordanelle? Good news or bad?

They just check for growth rate numbers and if they ear big mac's...

That's good food for the walleyes I never knew that Deer Creek had that many chubs.

Could be wrong but i'm pretty sure they were at Jordanelle. Walleyes at DC are GOOD news to me. I hope hope hope the perch had a good spawn with the high water most of the year! Perch are by far my favorite warm water fishes.
