Berry Shallows Starting ... 10-15-10

[#0000bf]Three of us launched my boat at 07:00 a.m. and bee-lined it to the the far east side of the medows. Casting into the shallows there we landed five nice cuts on Yo-Zuri Sashimi mino suspending jerkbaits in the CMNM color. These are pretty cool lures in that when you look at them from one direction, they imitate rainbow minnows ... from another direction they imitate chub. But these cool lures are even more pricy than Luck Craft. [/#0000bf]

We then tried several other spots with only fair results. Then we boated over to Horse Creek, "anchored up" using my minn-kota GPS spot lock, and nailed another 18-20 fish using 2 1/2 inch pearl white tube jigs tipped with chub. We were in 18-20 feet of water catching good numbers. We ended the day with a cout of 28 fish boated. We kept only one to bring back home to "Grandpa".

The guys that went with me said that they had never in their lives caught so many big fish in one fishing trip. It did my heart good to hear someone say that to me.

The water temps were 52-53 all day. In my log, I wrote, "The water temps have finaly dropped enough for the cuts to come up into the shallows."

It was a pretty nice day to be out with good friends, watching the elk move around the hills, eating some great smoked salmon, and catching a bunch of big beautiful trout. Man, that is just heaven![/#0000bf]

Very nice report and pictures Ralph, I finally got my boat back from the shop this week . I am going to try to get up there and get into some of that action now that the boat is going operate correctly. Did you launch at renegade?

We launched at the Strawberry Marina at about 6:30. There was only one other truck there when we launched. When we came back at the end of our trip, the parking lot was FULL!

One other thing I forgot to mention ... the water on the south end of the lake was the soupiest thickest algae laden water I had ever seen. the waters on the west shores were much clearer.

Where did you pick up those Yo-Suri lures and how much are they? Do they work better than the 78 pointers?

I got them at Sportsman's for about $17 each. They worked well enough that I decided not to even try my LC Pointers. But I would guess that they work about the same ... maybe a little better. I can tell you this; they cast a lot further. They are suspending lures so they don't float up at all when you stop reeling them. In my opinion, I think they might work just a little better. I suspect that that is because when fish see them moving through the water they see them as both chub and/or rainbow minnow. I still wouldn't be without the LC Pointers in my tackle box when fall fishing the edges at Strawberry though.

Hey Coot! Nice job on the fish, sounds like a great day! Question for ya, how do ya like the GPS spot-lock? does it work good in a little wind? Thinkin bout gettin one.

I love that Minn-Kota Spot-Lock feature. I thought that it might run down it's battery after fighting an afternoon of wind like it did. But when we left, it was still holding us spot on.

In a gentle breeze or no breeze it is absolutely perfect!!! Yesterday, in the afternoon 10-15 mph winds, it still held good but with some shifting of the back end of the boat. Whoever was in the front of the boat had best line control.

I will tell you this, never again, will I have a boat without one!

If you already have a Power Drive V-2, you can upgrade it rather than buying a whole new system.

But ya, it is a sweet little piece of electronics.

Coach,

I know you had good success at Willard with the Yo-Zuri Vibe FWs but I didn't realize you were also having success with their Suspending Jerkbaits too. That's good to know.

Sounds like you're putting your new ride to good use. Nice that you could share the outing, and bring them boyz on some big fish!

And heck - I thought a simple foot-controlled electric would be awesome. That just sounds too cool!
Thanks for the post. I got a couple "lure-saver" gadgets, but the one try didn't get my shad-crank back for me....
