Well, I have been telling Alvin all fall that I wanted to get a new PB smallie this year. We today was the day.
We started off fish the bank we left off on last night. We both started throwing pig n jigs with taker. So Alvin switched over to a jigging spoon and starts ripping bluegill and he got a couple of spots. I tied one on and never got the first hit.emoBang Alvin had me 13 bluegill and 2 spots to zero. I gave up and pulled out the drop shot powerminnow and landed a 7 lb blue cat. About 20 minutes later I set the hook and tell Alvin that I think this one is a bass. About that time the toad smallie came out of the water and I about crapped my pants. I yelled at Alivn that it was a huge smallie but he did not see it as she kept bull dogging me the whole time after she jumped. After what seemed like a lifetime of tug a war I finally got the big girl up to the boat and Alvin landed her for me. She weighed 5.03 lbs and was fat as a pig. My prevous PB was only 4.2 lbs caught on the Chick. Caught her on a 4" Watermelon pearl Gulp minnow. Unreal.
Moved on down the bank and about 20 minutes later I stick and land a 3.6 lb largemouth on the drop shot powerminnow. Pretty sweet. We fished the bank again and only boated two more spots on pig n jig.
Headed down river to a short rip rap bank that usually holds largemouth this time of year. They were there. Got 4 off that bank with two chunky keepers all on pig n jig. Hit a couple more banks and got a couple of spots and a redbreast and decided enough was enough.
Ended the day with 6 spots, 5 largemouth, 1 smallie, 13 bluegill, 1 redbreast, and 1 blue cat. Our best 3 bass went around 10.75-11 lbs. Not too bad for 5 hours of fishing. A day I will remember for a looong time.
Perfect day weather wise with no wind until around 12 (we left at 12:45). Water temp was 60.
