Hot and Cold at Pelican (12/31/10)
#1
For those headed to Pelican Lake this weekend (Jan. 1), the fishing right now is Hot. The catching of nice 8" to 9 1/2" bluegill and 11" to 14" largemouth bass was non-stop today (Dec. 31). The cold temps of the last few days have frozen the edges solid. Access and ice conditions are as good now as I have ever seen it. Very little slush, about 4" of snow on top of 6" to 7" inches of solid ice.

Have fun [cool]

Where on the lake were you at and what were you using? Did you see any snowmobiles or 4-wheelers on the ice?

The wife and I will be there the 7th & 8th. We have never gone this early so we will most likely do several trips this winter. I was visiting some friends in Fruitland last night and on my way home today noticed that the bay on Soldier Creek by the road to the dam off highway 40 was getting hammered by ice fisherman. I went by about 8 A.M. and there were probably 30 to 40 people in that little bay. The temp in my truck measured -4 degrees. She's making ice now.

We'll be staying in Vernal for a couple nights. If you decide to make it out, you know what my truck looks like and we will either be in a red Eskimo Quick Fish 3 or our new 12 X 6 red shelter from Glen's. Hope you can make it. Haven't seen ya since the 24th of July at starvation. Happy New Year.[fishin] I've added a picture of the wife and a picture of a morning's catch from last winter at Pelican.

Come on over, he would have a hoot. We should be on the ice by noon Friday as we stop in Vernal first and check into our room and get our gear on before heading to the lake and we will be there all day Sat. [fishin]

We fished on the east side (Highway side). There were only two other groups fishing on the east side but looking to the north side, I could see at least two shelters. I didn't see or hear any wheelers or snowmobiles.

We used Maniac cutter bugs tipped with mealworms. At least until we ran out of meal worms and that didn't take long. After that we just fished with the cutter bugs and the catching was just as fast if not faster because we didn't have to stop and re-bait. I got BIGbites and his friend fishing first and they each had three of four fish before I got started. Fun times. Temps were in the single digits to teens all day but the sun was shining bright and there was no W. The two boys fished in the shelter and had a hoot catching the gills and bass.

I talked to a guy fishing near by and he said he was seeing quite a few "larger" bass on his underwater camera, but he couldn't get them to bite. I think I caught about one bass to every two bluegill yesterday (Dec. 31). The bass were all 11" to 14".

Yes indeed, the ice is coming on strong now. Especially here in the basin. Last night it got down to at least -19 degrees. Right now at 6pm it is already down to - 10. Glad I'm nice and toasty in the house.

We will most likely see you out on Pelican on the 8th. I'm always up for meeting fellow BFTers.

I'd like to hit it like Wed-Thurs. I hate fishing during the weekend with all the others. I personally feel it turns the fish off a little to have that much pressure. Plus i got stuff going on with my boys on the weekends that makes it tough to dedicate a whole day to myself.

I cant go Monday but I'm game for about any other day anyone wants to go Smile
