Hi All,
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to fish the Naples' YMCA Redsnook Tournament. This event raises money for the local chapter's youth programs and is an IGFA/Rolex qualifying event.
I was fortunate enough to fish with the best fly fishing guide in southwest florida, Captain Ken Chambers, and his good friend and fraternity brother, Travis Fulford of Orlando. The tournament has three divisons, Bait, Plug/Artificial, and Fly. Travis and I chose Fly and Ken was our guide for two days of fishing the Goodland, Marco Island area. The tournament is a catch-photo-release format with 10 points awarded for every inch of fish on Saturday, and 15 points for every inch of fish on Sunday. Your top 4 snook and redfish count.
Saturday saw Travis shine as he caught two big reds, the biggest measuring in at 29". I contributed with two snook, but missed 4 other fish...ugh. We were sight fishing shallow areas, and blind casting the mangroves with different colored EP flies, primarily mullet colored. We finished the day in third.
If i was to keep my sanity, I needed to fish better on Sunday, and I did. I caught 2 reds and 2 snook, and Travis landed the big red of the tournament on fly...a 32" monster. It was a helluva fight. Unfortunatley, in the last 30 mins of fishing time, I lost the tournament winning 30" snook which got close to the boat once but broke me off on one last long run.
Nonethless, we ended up winning third place, and rasied a bunch of $$ for the local YMCA chapter.
Captain Ken Chambers was awesome, and had us around fish all day, some just wouldn't take anything, despite emptying the fly box on them...there was just too much bait around.
If your interested in scheduling a charter with Captain Chambers, his number is 239-289-0984, and his email address is captkenchambers@aol.com
Well...good fishing to everyone.
