I've stumbled across this site trying to decide where to try today and since Porky didn't have any press I decided to hit Hyrum... It was a late day after the honeydue's around home this morning, but got on the ice around 2:00... Didn't see anything on the graph after a half hour, so I moved to a spot that was good a couple weeks ago and had my limit of planters in about a half hour... Somehow that Masterbuilt smokers got me keeping the fish again... Thanks again for everyone's tips, I don't have many spare minutes in my life so it's sure fun to be able to catch a fish when I finally get out to try.... By the way the fish were only about 7 feet under the surface today, seen lots of folks fishing the bottom and not catching anything... Later..

Welcome to the site SA, I went ahead and moved your post to the Utah board because it was more of a report than and introduction. Good report thanks for posting it.

Thanks for the welcome, it's nice to have a spot to get some info to make the trips worth while.. Not that they aren't worth while just being out, but sometimes it's fun not to be Skunked again... By-the-way those Hyrum bows are really pretty and taste incredible smoked with a little alder wood and a salt, brown sugar and garlic salt maranate..... Not quite as good as salmon but really close... Later..

Welcome to the site. I have been wondering about porky as well but haven't seen anything. If you make it up there let us know how you do or anyone else on here for that matter.

Good report on Hyrum. Thanks for posting.

Hey got a question.... I caught this little fellow and I thought it was a blue gill, but I'm starting to wonder if it is a sun bass or I think they call them green sunfish... Does anyone know for sure????? See attached photo..

Sounds like some fun tugs. And welcome 'neighbor'. I'd wager you were up toward the inlet area? Seems like the popular zone, both for fish and fish-town. Though I haven't heard reports - I see folks on the west side. Would be a much shorter hike!

I've had mixed results - but it always seems like those trouts come cruising through every now and then. But sometimes gotta move to get on the perch schools. Some folks have hooked up some big lunkers out there. But it's one thing to hookup, another to get broke off! Argh! [mad]

If you wanna hit Porky sometime - I haven't tried it, but would like to. Give us a shout!
Man - hear posts on Ririe, I want some Koke! Think the Pig's are mostly smaller, but some big browns to tussle with too.

Wonder how the edges are.

Yeah, definitely a green sunfish. The Bear River is full of them. Welcome to the site and hope you get out again soon.

Hit the pig this morning. Ice is great, 7-8 inches of clear solid ice. There was about two feet of open water along the edges. Someone had left a plank at the bottom the dam (thanks). We didn't see any kokes go threw but caught a brown. It was a short trip though.

Thanks for the fish ID... So what's the story on the sunfish, do they get very big and why haven't I ever heard much about them? I tossed those two back, but are they good eating? These guys were about an inch across the shoulders so they probably would have had some fair fillets...

I also appreciate the Pig update, guess I'm heading to the Beav this weekend so I won't make it out on the ice, but thanks for the invite....

Oh, sorry I forgot, yup I was up towards the inlet, just love to hike that muddy hillside and see how much tackle I can scatter from top to bottom... I took my father-in-law a couple weeks ago and took the wheeler to get him out on the ice and that was sure a lot easier, but guess I'm too cheap to drive the truck and pay the state $6 to park, so I've been hiking the hill lately...

I've seen them to around 10", but they're usually smaller. Still, like you said they're thicker, so you could still get some meat. I haven't tried them, but I would think they would be similar to the other sunfish in flavor and texture. Maybe I'll have to try some this year.
