What in the hell is it??
#1
Alright, this has happened to me twice now and scared the hell outta me. Both spots I was fishing were small, secluded places, no cliffs, pretty remote, both at night time. I'll be fishing, and real close I hear a splash in the water like someone picked up a giant boulder and just dropped it in the water, and then another not far away. I don't hear the water break at the beginning like a fish jumping from the water, just a loud and heavy splash like someone cannon-balled into the water. What the hell is it?! As much as I try to put an object to the sound, I can't wrap my head around what it might be?? All I can figure it could be are those big soft-shelled turtles you see time to time, but how could it make this sound and splash?? Anyone have a similar experience??

Trout_Slayer and i had this happen to us fishing a mountain lake late at night. best we could figure it was either carp "tailing" or a big brown chasing food.... could indeed be a turtle, or a big predator fish chasing dinner, might even be a bird/duck (think along the lines of an owl or hawk)? needless to say we came up with the theroy (after many many coors lites) that big foot was throwing rocks into the water to scare us, and it worked

Yeah, I am going to agree with iamthesmf. Not a typical predator-fish style jump, but a carp jumping like a whale. Out smooth, and belly flop down.
