Heise Area of South Fork
#1
I am headed out to the Heise area tomorrow morning and was wondering if anyone wanted to share their super secret honey hole with me?! Or maybe just some advice on what flies/lures are working best and a general area to try out.

I have read and assume that mostly streamers are the way to go for fly fishing. I bought some Rapalas and want to try them out because everyone talks so highly of them but I hate to put the fly rod down.

P.M. accepted if you really want to keep that honey hole a secret! [Wink]

What colors of raps you pick up?

Size 9s are all we use anymore up there.

Colors: Brook Trout, Brown, Rainbow, and Silver.

If its a little murky those would be my go to rig. They produce a lot of bigger fish from now until it clears up after runoff.

I dont do much chucking and ducking with the fly rod so Im not much help there until the top water stuff comes on.

A good hole in that area is right below the narrow point turn before you drop down in to the hot springs. This time of year you can park at the upper lot and walk down the dry side channel until you hit the back water.

I would recommend going down below the Heise bridge lots of good access. If you don't mind doing a little walking there are a lot of good spots all the way down to twin bridges.

I don't fly fish so no help there. I agree with Bmarsh Rapala's work good as well as bouncing bait on the bottom or even gulp minnows. Mite be a ruff day they are calling for 20-30 mph wind good luck .

I got Rapalas in brown and rainbow trout and also some perch for some lakes.

I think I know where you are talking about. We will do a little exploring and try to get something on the Raps.

Thanks for the info!

I would recommend rubber legs w/ a san juan worm dropper or copper john. My buddy always seems to hit with those in there this time of year.

I have been down below the bridge and we did not have much luck...but I didnt have the Rapalas with me. We will prob try down there first and then head up into the valley if the wind is not too bad.

I will prob leave the fly rod if its going to blow like you say cuz fishing in the wind is no fun...but maybe we can get some scouting done for deer season

Dont be afraid to throw those perch raps too! It's kinda weird because they dont look like any fish in that river but they work really well on many of the rivers in the area, especially the south fork. This is a great time of year to fish before the man made runoff from paliSades, we always manage to get some good fish.
