Me and my brother went after some trout and sturgeon on Saturday and had quite the day. Hit the water about 9am and spent the first hour and a half drifting worms in the boat from right below the bridge until a little past the further powerlines. Caught 6 trout biggest was 18" rest ranged from about 14" to 16", 2 of them were tagged, haven't called them in yet. After the trout we went and anchored up in our 1st sturgeon spot. Got 2 sturgeon poles in the water with trout heads for bait and no more than 5 minutes after had our 1st sturgeon on. My brother grabbed the rod set the hook and the fight was on. I headed to grab the 2nd pole and reel it in and before I could get to the pole BOOM! 2nd fish on. OUR FIRST DOUBLE!!! HOLY CRAP!!!! I'm sure anyone within 10 miles could hear our whooping and hollering[cool][][cool]
We decided I'd bring mine in first got it in close to the boat to keep the two from getting tangled and we let the other fish have plenty of line and stay out of the way. 15 minutes later I landed mine a big fatty about 71/2 feet. Released him real quick and by that time the other was pretty easy to get in and about 6 feet. landed another 3 sturgeon throughout the day and 1 HUGE carp my brother snagged in the eye with a Crankbait that was so big it broke our net.[frown] One heck of great day.

Be careful using the trout heads. My buddy Got ticketed last year for that. The law says while in the field you have to leave the head and tails on trout.

"Head and Tail Removal: It is illegal to have in the field or
in transit any trout, char, salmon (coho, kokanee, Chinook),
steelhead, grayling, tiger muskie, or bass from which the head
or tail has been removed."

I had wondered about that, I guess we'll just have to use a whole trout next time and catch a Monster.

Sounds like you did awsome on the sturgeon congrats man, I've always wanted to catch on. How much you figure the biggest one weighed, also what lb test line do you use. Oh ya nice carp also bet you thought you had a sturgeon on hahaha[]

We usually just run 50 pound Big Game mono, I think its by berkely. But we've used both 60 and 40 pound before and caught fish with both. Personally I think 50 pound mono is perfect. Anything more is overkill in my opinion.
As far as how much the biggest one weighed I have no idea We need to start measuring their girth and there's a formula you can use to estimate weight. But I read something somewhere sometime [](I think, or I might just be pulling this outta my @$$) that said a 7 to 71/2 foot sturgeon would be somewhere around 200 lbs.

I was there too [] I actually caught that carp on Jo's ultralight on 6lb test. I was casting a crank bait as we were drifting hoping to catch a decent trout or a bass and happened to snag that carp in the head. It put up the lamest fight ever until we tried to net it. Then it got mad and broke the net. As far as sturgeon, the gear you use depends on whether you're fishing from a boat or the bank. We use 12 ft heavy action rods from the bank and 7 ft heavy or medium action rods from the boat with penn 330 reels and 50lb mono for both bank and boat fishing. we do have one penn 320 reel lined with 40 lb mono that we use sometimes and it works great too though.
