Cutler Cat
#1
Saturday tried the new boat for a shake down trip to see if it will work for fishing and to let my niece and nephew try to catch a fish. Hit Cutler from the Benson marina and it was really slow and cold after four or five hours.. Ended up boating one 14" channel cat seen lots of fish on the graph but couldn't figure out how to make them eat... Any ideas?

Sounds like not a bad-cat. At least you didn't just donate all your bait to them pesky little yellow bellies!

Did you head north or south from the Benson launch? My fish finder never does me much good in 4 feet of water, when it's so murky. Alas.

I've found some playful kitties around the bridges, and where waters flow together. Seems like sometimes hitting a 'corner' where they might hang and wait for food to drift by. Haven't had any luck with the other species out there. But I'll keep trying!

What were you fishing with? What kind of presentation?

I think that all the cold, wet weather is the main problem. If we can get a few nice warm days things should really pick up.

I hit the deep water under the marina bridge where we caught the fish. Then I went north to the Bear River and tried a few holes around my Dad's place, but the currents were ripping so fast it was kind of scary... I was using ice jigs tipped with angle worms suspended from a bobber about 3 ft down at first, but that didn't work.. So I sunk a night crawler to the bottom and caught the cat. Last night I got two good hits and a pretty good tug out of something but it got off before I could see it. I was fishing a ratso about 1 ft below a bobber and had seen some fish slurping the hatch... So maybe better weather is the answer..

I think your weather idea is right.. Our next problem will be high run off.. Has anyone tried Hyrum lately? I need to try my trolling motor and see if it will work. Is it worth the gas and launch fee?

I fish Hyrum last weekend and was able to land four nice rainbows in about 4 1/2 hours. I tried everything under the sun to get them guys biting, but the only thing they would look at was a string of bright orange and copper pop gear and a worm. There were four other boats out that day and I didn’t see any other fish caught. A little slow still but me and the old hound dog still had a nice day on the water.

I went Apr 1st, and trolled and jigged from the dam to almost the inlet. Was trying to work some tube jigs, and curly tails along the woody shores for bass, but no ticks.

Had planer boards out, but didn't try any pop gear, just some spoons, jakes, spinners - mostly tipped with worm. Things that were hot ticket last fall.
Didn't really spot anything on Sonar until got up toward Big Toe - did get a nice hookup, but he got off.

But I'd like to hit it again. I think Cutler might need more warming, unless - does it get ice-off scrounging against windblown shores like Willard? There's no gizzard shad, but should be some winter kill out there needing cleanup!

Thanks for the info.. I have lived here next to Cutler most of my life and haven't ever noticed much winter kill. Guess I seen a few dead crappie at times. But I haven't seen a lot.. I usually don't fish it much until it warms up...

Thanks for the report and your results. I've always liked those colors, they seem to catch fish for me more often than any others. Good luck and thanks again...
