#1
hit the lake @ about 7:30 chummed up the area with a dozen or so carp chum balls when we got there the water was quiet about 30 minutes later whooop wifes pole is in the water my son goes in after it, sets the hook and snaps it off. then my pole goes off seconds later, snap fish off this happens a few times before we actually get a solid hook up. my son caught 2 nice 2-3lb channels and a carp 4-5lb, my daughter got her biggest fish ever this carp was over 7lbs i had to help her land it. my wife ended up with a decent striper about 2lbs on my rod i was too far away, and a carp about 5lbs, and i ended up with a dink striper, and 3 carp from 2-6lbs, all in all we ended up with 10 fish and lost about 7, these fish are drag burnin mud doggin S.O.B.'S. lol it was a great day on the water off the water @ five, sooo sun burnt, many many people out there today from bankies to hot rodder jet skiers as usual. check out some of my pictures

on a side note: those carp chum balls are off the chain (thanx telbone!!) there were carp flopping all around the area i chummed, we got bit on almost every cast for about 4 hours.

Man o' man...

Nothing better than seeing the happy faces of youngsters catching fish. Nice pics and beautiful family Syn.

I am glad those chum balls worked out for you. That's a bit of different recipe than I have used in the past because it is supposed to also bring in sunfish.... did ya happen to notice if it brought any bluegills in... that was the reason for the recipe change. The only reason I ask is that the chum balls cost more than the soaked field corn I used in the past. If they don't help bring in the 'gills then there is really no reason to pay more.

Just an idea for a couple of you guys. Several years ago(before I owned a boat), I had a friend drop me off at a cove one evening (no idea where it was other than in the boulder basin). I set up camp then I walked the entire cove stopping every few feet to toss out a cup of chicken scratch. I used up two of the big bags of chicken scratch from wal-mart this way. I am quite sure every bit of coastline off of that cove had chicken scratch right off it's banks. I then made dinner drank a few beers etc etc... When I woke up in the morning it was truly an incredible site. There must've been thousands of carp working every inch of that shoreline. What a nice day of fishing that was. By the time my friend came and got me I was plumb wore out from catching all those fish. As a side note.. I tried this once by just dumping the bag of scratch in one spot.... bad idea... you want the fish moving up and down that shore looking for your scratch... not sitting in one spot fixating on it.(This only applies to LARGE amounts of chum... you want small spots of chum very controlled so you can fish right on it).

Your post really made my day. Carp are such an underutilized fish, especially when it comes to youngsters. Catching is so much more fun for the youngsters than sitting there.

Way to go brother....

i switched the recipe up a bit myself, i used regular oatmeal, creamed corn, whole corn, a bit of water, flour and corn meal to bind it all together, and i also added some strawberry extract to the mix, i seen some people use strawberry kool-aid in thier mixes online so i rummaged through wifey's spices and found some strawberry extract and ran with it then let them refrigerate overnight, as far as it bringing gills in, i'm not sure. i tossed around some meal worms but no takers and i didn't see any gills. but then again there was a boatload of carp around they may have been to scared to come in close. the 2 cats my son caught were caught on corn during the feeding frenzy, and they had corn in thier bellies upon cleaning also. so i'm assuming it brought the cats in.

sn: i found transporting the chum balls in a tupperware lined with a layer of cornmeal kept them from sticking together. also i tossed the balls out about 20 feet from shore, about a 40ft "fan" pattern worked out great with a rod every 10ft. within that pattern.

just plain ole kernel corn, del monte i believe it was lol. but the generic works just as well. we were stringing about 4-6 kernels on size 4 eagle claw snelled hooks, then tossin them out either carolina rigged or "dropshot" style they didn't seem to mind either way, my son was having trouble hooking up so i put him a size 4 circle hook on and he never missed another fish. tight lines[fishin]

Thats it man!! I made a DEADLY carp rig with that whole kernal corn - You know how europeans make those boilie hair rigs? With the circle hook and the long hair at the end? Well snell the hook, then add the hair, and put about 6 whole kernals from the tip of the hair, down the hook, and onto the line - the hook is invisible and exposed, you'll catch the super-spooky fatty's with that, and once they suck it up its not comin back out - check the monster carp in my pics!
