I would go. I have been looking into nebraska though. Colorado would be worth looking into since its closer as long as the lakes are big, and the fish stocking program is pretty heavy.

I got sick of seeing multiple catches per day of fish ten pounds plus in nebraska on the outdoor channel and have been dying to go.

Lake cumberland would be my top choice, but thats quite a bit farther than colorado or nebraska.

P.M. me with some info on the lakes you are looking into. I will give you a hand with the research end.

here is the info i have for now. i have found four lakes with wipers in colorado. three are right together and one is in the denver area. i am putting my own vote in for the queen state wildlife area and this is how it is as follows.

Nee Gronda: 2,600 acres no fee to get in. species of fish, walleye, sauger, small mouth, channel cats, white bass, wipers.

Nee Noshe: 3,616 acres walleye, saugeye, perch, crappie, largemouth, channel cats, northern pike, white bass, bluegill, wipers, tiger muskie.

Queens: 1,900 acres species. walleye, saugue, perch crappie, smallmouth, channel cats, northenr pike, white bass, bluegill, wipers, tiger muskie.

these are in south eastern colorado pueblo being about a hours drive i would guess looking at the map.

i read recent reports on the lakes saying they are low and or around 50 percent or so, typical for a plains lake in the drought. reports said fishing was steady for the summer species and wipers etc will pick up right now. i am proposing this trip for next year fall to hit the boils. they have gizzard shad for feed and the wipers act identical to ours in willard.

the state record is 23 lbs coming out of nee noshe. the fish and game cop i talked to there on my trip mentioned that 12 lbers or so are fairly common out of all three lakes mentioned and Lonetree the other up by denver.

i will be chekcing flights and driving distances next and possible boat rentals. i cant find any place to rent a boat so if anyone can help on that (predator Wink Wink) hehe it would be appreciated.

for me i will drive i dont want to drive more miles after 50,000 miles ive put on this year in traveling and vacations.

so thats it for now. thanks for the interest.

well for that far of a trip im thinking around 4 days or so. two off work and then a weekend. things get more complicated if peole drive and so forth cuz its a whole drive there and a whole drive back. but im just leaving this open for whoever wants to do whatever. i just saw this place and looks like a paradise for fishing so im for sure going next year and would be great for anyone else to go however yo uget there etc.

just spoke to the area fish and game for these lakes.

the info i received is as follows.

very low water so the drought has extended its fingers to eastern colorado as well Sad to say. nee gronde would be the best bet for wipers. no tiger muskie or northerns have been gill netted from the lakes in 7 years so that option is probably out. largemouth bass fishing is good for bass up to 8lbs or so. largest wiper is 32lbs coming out of nee noshe but the max depth there is 17 feet right now so alot like willard and could destroy the fishery.

the mentioned another lake john martin right in the area that has large wipers and is filled by the arkansas river. depending on water flows water could be good in it as well. nee grande is a bit deeper and is still ok for now. spring will be the best bet becasue of water issues and would probably have the best chance at higher water levels. if we went in september or octover then it is the same story again, perhaps dry lakes. they dont expect these two lakes to totally freeze and winter kill with current depths so fishing should be good next spring.

next note, total driving miles is 605 miles to pueblo and a additional 118 to wiley the closest town. about 20 miles to the lakes from there. i cant find any boat rental places in the area and they mentioned of knowing none either. this might be a dilemma for my flight idea but ill look into it further.

the area fish and game coordinator said they are picking up 10 + lb wipers consistently in peak seasons of spring and fall and the saugeye fishing is good with saugeye around 10lbs as well. thats enough to get me excited [Smile]

We are planning to do the same as you are by flying to Colorado but then we will rent a car and drive to Red Willow Reservoir and fishing with Steve Lylle(the guide). There is some good fishing in Colorado but I believe Nebraska is better.

One of the guys from the Colorado BFT site fishes for wipers all the time. He has posted on this site several times as Eric he knows the lakes in the Denver/Colorado Springs area. He can help you if you pm him or talk to him on the Colorado board. Check out my post about wipers in Colorado on that board. Good luck to you also Xman. WH2

oh ok ill talk to him. thats a great lead for some info. nebraska may be better i dont know but for 5 bucks a day non resident fishing license thats hard to beat. unless nebraska is the same area, then ill have to think about changing states for the trip. though i will do a self guided trip cuz im too stubborn hehe.
