Lake Lowell crappie?
#1
Seems that bass get all the attention on Lake Lowell, but what about the crappie? I know their numbers had declined in the 90s, but the department of wildlife did a transplant of crappie from C.J. Strike a few years back. Has it had any effect?

When I arrived at the ramp this morning there was a nice crappie, around 12" lying dead on the ramp. I don't know what was the deal, but it was a nice fish. Last year I had a couple of crappie hang on to the tails of some Senkos I was fishing. I have also noticed a large increase in small perch the past year or two. They used to be the dominant forage fish in the lake 40-50 years ago. They almost disappeared along the the bullhead, which were everywhere back then.

Saw that same crappie at the ramp. I've heard rumors for years about some very large crappie in that lake. Tried to find them a few times but never have caught a crappie there.......

Used to live off of 12th ave and Lake Lowell. haven't been to the lake in 6-8 years, but i never really learned that lake.

One trip, the wife and I (well her mostly) got into the crappie at the Caldwell dam, by the bouy's at the outlet. We only caught like 6 or 7 fish, but none were under 15 inches and 2 were over 17. all in about 30 minutes, then we couldn't buy another bite. cranks on the riprap were good though for LM.

red and white jigs(all she fishes with) with one small split shot. I honestly think there were more fish there. but we spooked them out when the wind pushed us into the bouy's and we got too close.

I think LL is a very underrated fishery. The issue is, with all the cover, fish can hide anywhere, and you really have to put your time in to learn the lake. I never did, i went to Strike or Brownlee.

I also grew up on lake lowell ave, this was in the 70s,
I used to ride my bike out there all the time, we used to catch some really nice Crappies mostly out at Gotts point.
Not sure if they still do it but some group used to sink old tires blocks and just about anything else that would sink out off the point it made some pretty good structure and we used to do really well there, also when the water is up my dad and i would would drift along all the Olive trees around the point and catch some big uns just jigging Doll flies.
We used to catch some pretty big Catfish right where the New york canal flows in, talked to an old buddy a couple of years ago and he claimed he was catching cats up to 20 pounds there but could only catch em at night.
Man that place has sure changed, i can't believe all the gates and restrictions around that lake now.
