Hello!
I'm new to this site and fairly new to fishing in general. I'm looking to go out Sunday morning (day before memorial day) for some shore fishing with the family. I've been reviewing the posts and Love the maps, but my question is this... What will be the easiest, least crowded place to get to with a 5 year old where we will actually catch something? We've done Floyd Lamb and Sunset with no luck and I'd like a rewarding experience for the kiddos. I'm not familiar with the area much more than the highways, so any help would be really appreciated.

Fishing anchovies/corn on the bottom or casting lures could possibly produce a vareity of fish. These next few months are a good opportunity for a novice angler to catch grundles of catfish or carp from shore.

Memorial Day weekend is like the first day of "going to the lake season!" Everyone goes to the lake that weekend whether by boat or by walking. I remember last year we waited in line about an hour and a half to pull our boat out at Calville Bay. We even camped out a few weeks later at Govt wash and there we at least 20 other camp sites. The ideal fishing holes may be gone, or were people usually go, but there are fish all along the back and there are tons of places to access the lake by govt wash or the next dirt road about a half mile past that 4 wheel drive is not necessary.
Have to figure that with everyone pulling fish out at a particular point it may be beneficial to try and get away from the crowds for fresh water.

If your looking to get away from the crowds over the holiday weekend, catch some fish, and don't mind a little drive check out Upper and Lower Enterprise Lakes outside of Enterprise, Utah, North of St. George a 2 hour drive. The lakes are off the beaten path for the most part and have good fishin. In the upper bigger lake has scrappy smallmouth bass and rainbow trout, and the lower lake has primarily smaller 10-14" stocked rainbows.
Of course if your fishing on a Sunday, many of the Utah fishermen are in Church, which lightens the crowds on Sand Hollow, Quail Creek, and Gunlock Res all around St. George. Gunlock is still fishing slow, but Sand Hollow and Quail are both doing great. I'm taking my 4 yr son up to Sand Hollow soon, after geting some of the basic down.
As it heats up and gets tough on the little guys, check out the higher elevation lakes in Northern Nevada, Utah and NW Arizona. The last few years I've really started fishing the Flagstaff area hard for Northern Pike, not a good pick for kids, instead I set him up for trout and Yellow Perch fishing. In Utah check out the lakes east of Beaver they are fun and you can fish he small river as well, or just splash around in it and spook the fish. If your a trout fisherman check out Navajo Lake outside Cedar City, it gets less pressure than Panguitch and has some good fishin. Or for big ones try Kolob Res, little tougher fishin for new anglers tho.
Like others have said expect Mead to be a nut house over the holiday weekend, I avoid Memorial day and Labor day crowds on the lake they tend to get unruly pretty quick with the alcohol and sun.
Good Luck where ever you go.
