Fellow striper anglers.

Here is the scoop on that giant striper caught last Saturday near South Cove on Lake Mead.

Kingman residents Rick and his son Nick Olivas were part of the 40 teams that were entered in our annual Stripe-R-Rama tournament. This was our 20th year and was it ever exciting!

Rick and Nick were trolling Kevin Van Dam signature 6" deep diving crankbaits over a flat in about 40' of water when the old sow hit. The time was 7:45 p.m.

Olivas said that without the capability to chase after her, they would have never got her in. His son was using a spinning reel loaded with brand new 12 lb flurorcarbon line, and the big fish made two huge runs that almost spooled him.

Then she seemed to tire and just gave up and when they got her to the boat, she was near death.

She weighed on our tournament scales, 52.15 lbs, and along with 39 other stripers that the Olivas boy's brought in, they set a tournament record of 115 lbs for 40 fish!

To put it into perspective, the second place team checked in with 73.65 lbs, third place had 70 lbs, fourth place, 69.55 and fifth place 66.70 lbs. This was for 40 fish.

The second big fish money went to an angler that had a 3.95 lbs fish.

Our tournament sponsor, Mr. John Patel of Kingman, threw in a special prize of $500 cash to the Olivas team.

There were 799 fish checked in by the 38 teams that fished this year (we had two no-shows) and the total weight of all the fish was 1181 lbs. That is way down from 2010 when 46 teams got 1200 fish that weighed about 1600 lbs.

Anyway, good tournament as always, we hope next year that we can get some of the Nevada Striper Club guys down to help us catch more stripers.

Hey what is the Lake Mead record, anyone know?

P.S. When I picked out my prize off the table that is sponsored by Mr. Patel, everyone before me seemed overlook the brand new Eagle color fish finder that was marked with a $515 price tag from Wal-Mart. Not a bad prize for a 17th place finish and a $60 entry fee!

Syn I don't think they (rick, nick olivas) ever took a picture. You would think there would be pictures all over the net, newspaper of this beast considering it was a tourney and all but from what I gather the folks who fished the "stripe-r-rama" were the only ones to see the fish. Some peeps just dont care for pics I guess.
