Fun at Lake Lowell, or friends in velvet
#1
This post has little to do with fishing, but I hope that some readers can enjoy these photos as much as I have. They also illustrate that man and wildlife can co-exist without locking out the humans.

On May 11, I was fishing my way up a drain ditch that runs into Lake Lowell. The lake was extremely high which forced all the land mammals closer and closer to the roads. These deer, which all seem to be bucks were right up against the road, when they realized that something was approaching by water.[Image: 2011-0511-deer-3w.jpg]

Take a look at the buck to the right of the tree. His budding antlers extend very flat, rather than heading upward as is usual. This is often the sign of a buck that will have a very nice set of antlers.

Then on June 7, My wife drove in the driveway and said there were a couple of buck deer browsing just down the road. I grabbed my camera and we headed about 1/2 mile down the road. There he was, along with a friend that also had a nice set of antlers sprouting.

Here's another view of the same buck, taken at the same time. He is now showing thick beams and still appears that he will carry a nice wide set of antlers.

Then on June 21 we were sitting on our deck watching the quail at our feeder when the wife exclaimed that there was a big buck deer in the pasture about 40 yards away. I got a glimpse of him as he moved behind a tree and one of my brush piles. He didn't come out, so I walked over to my boat and got my camera. As I was on my way back, she called out that he was moving again. As I crossed the lawn he posed for this nice photo. I believe it was the same buck.

Yesterday while we were again enjoying our deck, 4 does walked out of our east pasture and crossed the road and onto the refuge. But we haven't seen the buck. The USFWS refuge across the road is called Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. You can see why. Every evening we have several cars slowly cruising along looking for deer. So far this year however, I have yet to see a fawn. We have been sharing the lake and refuge with the fish and game for 100 years, and I sure hope our federal government will allow us to do so in the future.

I hope to see that buck many more times this summer, fall and winter when I have my camera available. If so, I'll be sure to post his picture.

Last fall we had a very large non-typical buck that was coming across the road to feed on our plums and apples. Then one evening a car driving way too fast came down the road, and I heard a big thump. I looked out the window to see this beautiful buck sprawled on our front lawn. The car never slowed down. The buck staggered to his feet, jumped the fence into our pasture and we never saw him again. My dog and I searched the pasture and the lake out front, but we never found a body.

Smartweed: I haven't fished your area lately because morning chores keep me from an early start. don't want to fish mid day in this warm weathr. Has bass fishing slowed? Would evening fishing be promising? I know, you can't catch fish without getting a hook in the water. Thanks, Dave [Smile]

I haven't fished Lake Lowell for about 2 weeks. This time of year I fish the Snake River, due to the solitude. I used to catch quite a few fish in the evenings, but on a water year like this one you will need a boat or tube to get to the outside of the smartweed - unless you fish the dams or docks.
