Oneida thank you
#1
To the two gentlemen last Tuesday that were so kind to help a struggling sole out that couldn't figure out how to catch a walleye I appreciate your assistance very much and so did my nephews. After two mornings of being skunked your tips helped us land our limit for the last day. Thank you J

Do you know if they were BFT members? Either way that is awesome that you got them figured out.

Good that you got into some. Were you fishing deep or on the rocks along the shore? Any size to them? Thanks!

I don't know if they were members or not but thought just in case I'd send a thank you. Thanks for the well wish. I was just glad to get the skunk off the boat.

I was fishing about 12 to 16 feet deep on the sand and rocks along the south shore. They were small the largest was around 16 inches and might of weighed two pounds at best. But they did taste really good. I did hook into a nice 17 inch rainbow as well sort of a nice mixed bag. Still not sure why I couldn't buy a bite the first two mornings the graph was showing lots of fish at all levels and I don't think they were all carp. I tried everything in my tacklebox and I can always find a planter to hit after that much time dragging hardware but not this trip. Anyway it is sure appreciated when someone helps you out.

Can you share what they shared with you?

Out of respect for them I'd rather not on the open forum, but I will say pay attention to where your graph is showing the fish and fish there.

That's cool. Sounds like you caught some nice ones. Any walleye over 11inches in there is a big one. It seems like 11 - 12 inches is the norm. No small mouths???

Thanks it was sure fun. I did get one small mouth at 11 inches and that one was measured since I've never tried eating one of them before I wanted to keep it but it wasn't big enough so it's still swimming. Got a green sunfish and a perch and a bow and some crayfish it was interesting to see what would come up next.

It is a prolific reservoir that I think could be great, if 80% of the biomass wasn't carp. Fun trip---even the crayfish were biting! [laugh][laugh]

It was fun. The crayfish were actually caught by hand but I didn't know they were in there and I always wanted to try one so we boiled one up to try it. Next time I'll have some butter and spices and they could be good but they were spawning and so we had to hunt for a male to try but after the spawn is over I'd like to try a batch. I think the scouts would get a kick out of catching and cooking up a pot. Does anyone know off hand if you can use minnow traps to catch the crayfish legally? It might be fun to do a minny deadliest catch and give each scout a pot (minnow trap) and see how they would do. I would have liked it as a kid but I didn't grow up with video games either.

Couldn't believe all the crayfish I saw there this weekend. If I knew how to cook them I would have tried.

It was pretty cool to see them wasn't it. The guys I work with keep telling me to cook them cajan and they buy a crayfish spice mix on line that they put in the water and then just boil them alive until they turn red. They tell me you have to suck all the stuff out of the head it's supposed to be the best part. But I'm sort of gullible so not sure I trust that. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. J

We cooked up about 50 crawdads tonight. Potatoes, carrots, baby corn, salt, and two boxes (4 bags) of the crab boil spices from Walmart. Boiled for 20 minutes or so over a propane burner, threw in the crawdads after rinsing them and boiled for another 15 minutes, and then a bag of frozen shrimp for 5-7 more minutes. All finished pretty perfectly.

Pull the tail off, I salted mine, and suck the meat out. And yeah, crush the head as you suck to get some tasty juices out of the body

I'll be down there again this weekend and am thinking I'll try to catch and cook some crawdads. Other than what's been posted, does anyone have an easy recipe? How bad do they taste if they're just boiled alone?

They don't taste bad they just don't have a lot of flavor so I would take some butter and garlic salt and melt the butter and flavor it with the garlic salt then dip the crawdads in it like crab or lobster. I think you'll like it. Good eats. J
