Scout camping and fishing spots.
#1
Due to limited success last year I have been appointed officially in charge of fishing trips for my sons boy scout troop. Apparently any catching of fish at all was a vast improvement over the past.
So, as I plan our trips I would like to ask your opinions on places to go. Here are the things needed to qualify.

Must have fishing and camping, free is prefered, but fee camping is not out of the question.
Must be within a one and one half hour drive of Salt Lake City, roughly 100 miles.

Other than that, it's wide open. Here are a few suggestions I already have. Locomotive Springs, Vernon Res.(which we did last Nov and had a great time at.), Payson Lakes and Smith Morehouse.
Help me out with some others if you can.

Mantua and East Canyon can be good and free. You guys stuck to the shore or do you have boats and such?

I would recomend petes hole. It's probably closer to 120 miles, but it,s spectacular scenery, and fairly easy and consistant fishing for the scouts. Free camping is everywhere there. To access , go up ephriam canyon to skyline drive, left on skyline for about a quarter to a half mile. Take the joes valley road to the right , travel 8- 10 miles and watch for the petes hole sign to the right. The lake (along with a couple others there ) sits at about 8-9000 ft in the pines. It takes about 2-21/2 hrs from west jordan to get there. But it's worth the drive.

The burraston ponds are close to home and usually are good for some snits. Lots of free camping would be a good place to take a scout troop as well.

Gotta agree with LordofthFlies.....Mirror Lake Highway is beautiful, sorta free ($6 per vehicle for 3 days) and has TONS of fishing holes. Whitney Reservior is a good place to camp and fish up there.

No free camping up there as far as I know at Mantua. There really are not a whole lot of places to camp for free with great fishing. That is why the Uintas is probably best for these guys.

I used to camp up at Currant Creek a lot this year and there were free spots to camp below the dam and awesome fishing from May to early July from shore but the fishing has slowed down as far as I have heard. Who knows the fall could be good again?

For the original question I have heard good things from a friend of mine and even someone else on the forums that the Canyons Resort in Park City has frisky tiger trout at a decent size in a pond at the top of the chairs. Might not be camping but they are fish, not a bad little day trip. It is all C&R though, which is a no go for me. Just tossing out ideas.

In the winter I see alot of scouts at Rockport. There is a fee, but the heated bathrooms sure are nice.

I saw the same thing this year! There were even some die hard campers at Twin Coves as well.

I do way better for the rockport trout in the winter and the smallmouth bass in the spring. There are some nice campsites near the dam that are pretty nice looking. I think it is called "Ceader Point" or something close to that? Still that costs money too.[frown]
