mammoth lakes,ca. 9/14-18/11

[cool]Got back yesterday from mammoth lakes,ca. Spent one day at crowley lake for two 15 inch trout. Then met up with Dale( sealfish) and friend Paul to fish the lakes basin. Thursday was next to camp to fish twin lakes. We caught trout like every other cast. Using 3and 4wt. flyrods and small nymph patterns. Friday was at mary lake and a slower bite on the fly. Saw a nice feeder creek that had some nice size native browns and brookies. Saturday went to starkweather lake on the back side of the mountain. First time setting out the crawdad trap cause this lake has alot. Fished all day there, catching lots of trout on the 4and 5wt rods. Also caught about thirty crawdads. The meal that night was crawdad appetizers and trout burritos. Sunday back at mary and more trout in the shallows. Also had two bear encounters in our campsite on two nights. No damages but gave Dale a fright as he walked up on the bear at night. Very nice trip for cooler temps and flyfishing fun.

Very nice trip, wish I could have joined you early on at Crowley, miss those freight train hits!

That bear freaked me out after a night of cocktails it was kind of a surreal experience running into him at the camp.

I need to go back to Starkweather for more crawdads!!!!

Great report BigE..Now that looks like a nice fishing/camping getaway. Not to mention a break from the Vegas heat. Weather should be gettin real nice around here soon and the bite at Mead usually gets real good for striper, LMB and cats. Lookin forward to a little cooler weather.

Damn this got me jealous, campfire, lake, fish...sounds perfect about now - that 5th picture down of the trout suspended in the shallows blew my mind, that water is crystal! What are those? I can't figure out what species those are.

Brook trout, they were headed up a small creek from a lake, fall migration/spawn. There were a bunch of them but too wary to fish for and too tight of an area to follow up stream.
