Cave lake Report

Headed up to Cave lake on Friday with the family and some friends.
Friday afternoon 10-28
We started on the north side in float tubes, it was all the fish you wanted on green and brown wooly buggers, my daughter and I were fishing fly and bubble rigs, on 4 pound and the others were using fly rods with sinking line.
between the 5 of us we caught and released over 50 fish in about 2 hours, keeping only 2 deeply hooked fish for snacks.

Sat morning10-29, same as Friday, fished our tubes between the launch ramp and the dam. My daughter caught her first brown trout, about 12 inches, and skinny, all the rest of our fish were rainbows, very healthy fish, all cookie cutter size, 8-10 inches, I got one 14" rainbow toward the evening, all told I caught and released well over 30 trout on Saturday, same fly bubble combo as Friday.
also caught about 50 JUMBO Crawdads and boiled em up with potatos, Corn, sausage and spices...
Sat night dinner!


Sunday 10-30, fished from shore on the dam with my daughter before leaving Sunday morning, was a bit slower from shore than the tubes, but still managed 5-6 in about an hour, only one fish on anything besides the green fly and that was a blue and chrome kastmaster, 1/8 ounce size.


Weather was good, cold at night down to 19 on friday night and a bit warmer 23 deg on Sat. highs in the mid 60s during the day, light winds, no one there, less than 10 other people fishing both days, never made it to the south end of the lake where bigger fish were said to be. "never leave fish to find fish" my motto.

Next time you will be telling us how you got a citation for using game fish as bait. Not legal...don't let a game warden catch you doing that.

Also...."Eastern Region Bait Regulations:

Within this region, which includes Elko, Eureka, Lander and White Pine Counties, the possession or use fish as bait, whether dead or alive or any parts thereof except for preserved salmon eggs, is prohibited. Other aquatic bait(live, unprotected salamanders, waterdogs, frogs, crayfish,clams and snails) may be used only in the water from which it is taken."

I thought that those regs applied to using game fish as bait for other game fish ie: live trout as bait for bass or stripers, what can be used for Crawfish bait???

can I use frozen chovies? squid? how about Tuna carcasses? Canned catfood made from fish? please clarify if you can.
Edit: on further reading of the regs, all I can determine is that in the eastern section no fish may be used as "Bait". So in the future I will refrain from using any kind of "Fish" as Crawfish bait. I will not be turning myself in to DFG, they have too many other real criminals to deal with, if you guys want to lynch me, I'll be bassin in the wash...

Sorry if I came off a little harsh but I really get irritated when anglers don't follow the rules. I know that you misinterpreted the regs and I realize that they are not always easy reading.

What I hate is when I see an angler have a complete disregard for the fishing laws. I've seen certain people livelining a trout as striper bait and it makes my blood boil. I've seen others fishing without a license or over catching their limit. Personally, I'm always glad to see the game wardens around and I enjoy talking to them if the occasion arises (like when they are checking licenses).

I believe the reason behind the "no game fish rule" is that it cost the state (we the license paying anglers) money to stock game fish within the state lakes. Also the "no live or dead bait" rule is to prevent any comtamination of the waters if the bait is from other than the system it came from.

There are exceptions to the "no bait rule" in other regions. The Southern Region allows certain live or dead bait use in the Colorado system only. It is important to read and understand the fishing regs for the enjoyment of everyone of our precious water resources.

So enjoy the fishing and thanks for the nice report. The pictures really add to it.

the end by the dam is where the big ones are. Last time I was at cave lake i caught a 9lb brown.


for crawdads i used to go to mcdonalds in Ely and get there cheap hamburger. take a hook and line and put a big chunk of the hamburger on it and let the crawdads grab it and lift them up slowly and have my wife put the net under them.

there are some big crawdads in there. little lobsters

I agree with following the laws. But I was told by the Ranger that lives there at cave lake, we were allowed to use the trout for crawfish bait. Was also told this by the division of wildlife guy up there.

I appreciate that you respect the laws and I was not implying anything different. I just thought you would like a heads up not to use gamefish or any other type of fish in the Eastern Region waters for bait.

The Cave Lake Park Ranger apparantly is not familar with that portion of the fishing laws nor do they enforce them. The law says that you (in a general sense) are responsible for knowing the laws. I doubt a game warden would let you off on that statement and the use of gamefish as bait is a heavy fine (I believe it is $250).

2010 NV Fishing Guide, p. 9; Using Fish for Bait: Please see pages 10-12. Gamefish and protected species of fish may not be used as bait.

There are no exceptions.

No way, not over a few mud bugs! I would have done the same thing and figured it was legal and proper. I thought the same thing....don't use gamefish for bait to catch other fish. Now I know that I can't dig a trout carcus out of the dumpster and use it to catch crawdads. It must be better to put bacon or hambuger or chicken or maybe an old slice of pizza into the lake. I'm all for following the rules, keeps us civil and all.........but I wonder if someday I'll be getting a ticket for a regulation I did not know or fully understand. I hope not.
