Lake Mead lately

Saturday and Sunday, 12/10&12/11- What a great fishing weekend! Pictures say it all:

[inline 12-11-1107.JPG]

Both days hit the water early. Ran to Las Vegas Wash on cold dark water. Arrived an hour before gray light. Saturday we observed an eclipse of the full moon. Awesome. Netted bait in the dark and put shad to work by flash light. Started hauling in stripers right away.

As the sun comes up boats arrive in the wash on Saturday. Everyone seems to be catching fish.

Shad was the ticket today. Only caught one fish on swimbaits.

Guess who we ran into on Saturday. Fish On.

This is what happens when you fish off the bottom.

I saw you out there on Saturday, you were right in the middle of the bay. We had our Striper Club Tournament over the weekend.

We got bait up in the wash around 10am and hit the "gap" on the east end of the vegas wash. We did drifts all day from the gap thru the "cut" (Sand Island) to the "highway" (near government & 33 hole).

The fish were on the bottom and dropper rigs with shad got the fish. The bigger fish 3 to 4 pounds were deeper and only wanted fresh dead shad. Some fish were down at 140ft to about 170ft and as shallow as 85ft.

SIDE NOTE:

I talked to Toni and Deborah fron NDOW about fishing in Boulder Harbor.

You can fish and net bait in the harbor, but not near the launch ramp. The sign on the dock is an old/out of date from the last marina. The launch ramp area must be kept clear for boat traffic (see the NDOW rule book).

It was great to meet you out there Saturday Baysport! As we worked our way further and further into the bay casting swimbaits, lipless, etc all I was really doing was looking for your boat since that is the only one I know what it looks like. Figured you would have some great tips [cool]

Thanks a ton for the shad [Wink] Made my life easy since I haven't broke out my new casting net yet and didn't want to look like a fool trying to cast it for the first time up there with so many people around. I can't believe the fleet of boats in there. Dam! Wasn't expecting that.

All in all we had fun and it was a new experience. I am not a huge bait fisherman fan but one needs to do something different every now and then. Did lots of exploring after 12 on the way back up towards Callville where we launched from. Not much for LMB for SMB down there that I seen. I like it up in Echo WAY more for them and out towards the Virgin/Temple Basins. I guess if we want Striper then down that way but everything else elsewhere... Caught plenty and released them all. Nothing too big but fun. Madi landed the majority of them and had a ball.

The Lunar eclipse was pretty darn cool. We caught all of it on the water as we headed down to the Bay in the dark and we stopped out in the middle of the lake to watch the moon go completely away. Wish I would of brought a good camera. The cell phone didn't take good pictures of it at all.

It might be a good idea to start a sticky thread on the top in which everyone can post their picture and or boat so others can identify them easier? Baysport is the only one I know to look for out there.

The average size of Stripers we landed Saturday.

Thanks for the update. There has not been a lot of action here lately was wondering if the lake shut down for the weekend. I took my kiddo out to recon the water near Gov wash and it was pretty quite in the afternoon from what I could see. Cheers J.

I think it may be a state record! [Wink] First throw of the net, in the dark. Thought it was a carp. The largest gizzard I've brought in. No, thankfully, the net did not tear.

My first thought was to filet it and give it to the neighbor I don't like that keeps bugging me for striper. Naw just kidding. Gonna make one of those "chum bombs" that I've read about.

Good plan! Thought about going out there and sending shad deep but just could'nt leave the wash with so many small stripers about that wanted to hit the ice chest. My pard wants to fill his freezer.
