Fished Charleston this morning. Had 4 inches of good ice. Made it out 200 yards out to the crack in the middle . Didn't dare step near it. about 20 guys out there and the fishing was slow. Caught 5 of em on paddle bugs and mealies in about 10 feet. Fish cops were out checking permits on the ice and parking fees. Seen quite a few guys on the wallsburg arm ice fishing no one near the island and no one in rainbow bay.

Thanks for the report. I love fishing Deer Creek year round and have been disappointed that I haven't been able to get out on the ice there yet.

[cool][#0000ff]I did a drive by on my way back from Starvy yesterday. Looks like the whole lake is mostly capped...but a lot of the ice looks scary...with thin spots and some big cracks and pressure ridges. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There is a big open spot at the north end of the island but it is otherwise ringed with ice. Not sure how thick.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Rainbow bay looked solid but there is a big new crack running NW from the shore to the rock point.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Saw evidence of some holes drilled a short ways offshore just west of the island boat ramp.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Wallsburg bay is mostly capped but open water out in front of the ramp. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Didn't see anybody on the ice anywhere late in the afternoon.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]With that thin new ice a couple of things can happen. A few cold nights can finish the capping and thicken the protected areas. A few warmer days with a bit of wind can rip off whatever ice there is. Weather forecast for the next week does not look like ice-making conditions.[/#0000ff]

thanks TD thats what i needed to hear. if it gets safe enough for my perchin areas around rainbow bay i might go this sunday.. if it freezes are you going to ice fish it since youve been hitting it a couple of times in the tube and catching some nice perch, cause i know on a thread earlier you said you werent going to drill anymore holes till this december. i think that lake will be great for perch if the access is available. thanks again

[cool][#0000ff]There has been drillable ice in Rainbow Bay longer than almost any other spot on DC. I would bet you could get out to the previously most productive spots. But be sure to do some test holes on the way out. Ice looked good around the edges yesterday but the lake has come up a bit since my last tubing trip in January. I might suggest that your favorite spots are deeper than they were last year. Could affect where the fish are holding.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I just finished putting up my sleds, augers and other ice fishing gear. Ain't gonna get it back out until the end of the year. Hopefully DC freezes earlier and we can hit it by New Years. [/#0000ff]
